Like many middle school girls, I was teased through my pre-teen years. It was hard for me to make friends. I was a happy, light-hearted girl who loved the outdoors. My enthusiasm for fitness is what finally gave me the opportunity to "fit in." A new gym teacher my senior year of high school allowed me to follow along with tae-bo kickboxing videos in the wrestling room or use the weight room as an alternative to playing sports. This encouraged me to take real kickboxing classes at a local gym. I finally began using the YMCA membership my mom got for our family more often with a friend. There is something about punching thin air and moving weights around that boosts your self-esteem. The funny looks and weird comments that happen in all high schools began to affect me less and less. I felt good and looked good.

Through college I became very involved with the recreation center and its programs. I decided to study Exercise Science and become ACE Certified as a personal trainer. I learned that even when you are around fitness and recreational folks, there will always be bad apples who tease you. But at least by this point I had gained enough confidence and self-worth to stand up for myself and others who were being ridiculed. The mean comments whispered behind my back no longer affected me the same way and I began attracting new friends. People who were also tired of being treated unfairly were like magnets to me. I have now impacted hundreds of fitness clients and students pursuing fitness careers because of this positive attitude and confidence.

Being a personal trainer, national presenter and writer has taken me on journeys all around the world. I am so very grateful to the industry for inspiring me every day. It is easy to make friends when you have an optimistic outlook on life and treat everyone you meet like a best friend. I am one of the least judgmental fitness professionals you will ever meet because I know what it is like to be teased and left out. Everyone needs a community to be a part of and I am proud to call ACE one of my many "homes."
