ACE Profiles | Brandon Corrales

Fitness and nutrition have played a huge role in my life and have helped me in my recovery from wounds received in combat, both physical and mental.

In high school I fell in love with exercise and more specifically the sport of bodybuilding. I trained hard and competed in two bodybuilding shows as a teenager before joining the U.S. Army Infantry in 2009, at the age of 19. Soon after graduating Basic Training, I was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where I was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. On February 12, 2010, I was manning my .50 cal machine gun when an insurgent hurled a Molotov Cocktail at my vehicle, which engulfed my entire body in flames. Fortunately I was only suffered second-degree burns, but coming back from that deployment and the horrors of war really made an impact on my emotions. I was medically retired from the Army due to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and other physical ailments in 2013.

Since my retirement, I have had three surgeries due to injuries sustained in the Army. Transitioning back to civilian life has been difficult, but studying for and obtaining my ACE Personal Training Certification has given me the sense of purpose that I had in the military. I can now wake up in the morning and know that I am still making a difference in the world. I have also been able to recover from my physical wounds with the knowledge obtained from my certification.

My goals and hopes are to reach out to my fellow veterans who are dealing with both mental and physical illnesses, to give them hope and motivation to lead a healthy and productive life. I feel that exercise has saved my life and I hope that I can pass this passion along to others.
