Whether you’re starting a new exercise program or trying to adopt a healthy habit, new beginnings can be both exciting and challenging. While some people look forward to change, others fear stepping outside of their comfort zones. If you find yourself identifying more with the fearful types, some words of wisdom may help inspire you to change your perspective. Here are eight quotes, accompanied by some thoughts, that could be the inspiration you need to get started on a journey toward a healthier, happier life.

“Start wherever you are and start small.” – Rita Bailey

Many people who start an exercise routine are looking for big and fast results. The greatest gains, however, come from the small steps of change you make each day. Take one step at a time and you’ll be on your way to success.

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.” – Plato

For most people, the most difficult step is the first one, which usually involves committing to an exercise routine or quitting unhealthy habits. Much like anything else, the more you do something, the easier it becomes and eventually develops into a habit. Many people claim that once exercise becomes a habit, life is not the same without it because exercising makes them feel so good.

“If all you can do is crawl, then start crawling.” – Rumi

Some people avoid starting an exercise program because they believe they need copious amounts of time or skill to exercise effectively and that everything must change all at once (all-or-nothing thinking). But if the only exercise you can commit to is a daily10-minute walk, three times per week, do that. Likewise, if the only healthy habit you can actually do is to drink more water, then focus on that task. If all you can do is crawl, then start crawling.

“You don’t need endless time and perfect conditions. Do it now. Do it today. Do it for 20 minutes and watch your heart start beating.” Barbara Sher

Despite what you may be telling yourself, you don’t need a gym membership, fancy cooking equipment, copious amounts of time or new shoes to make a lifestyle change. Technology has made it possible for us to workout in our home and watch free recipe videos. As the quote above points out, your heart will beat whether you are practicing yoga or with the love you pour into cooking a healthy meal for your family.

“Whatever you do or dream you can do—begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Do you dream of running a marathon? Have you always wanted to summit a mountain? Fulfilling dreams can take time, but never lose sight of what you want to accomplish. The small steps you take toward adding movement and better nutrition will bring you closer to living your dream.

“Don’t worry about being worried. You’re heading out on an adventure and you can always change your mind along the way and try something else.” –Tracy Kidder

Are you worried that working out will take time away from your family? Has an injury prevented you from initiating lifestyle changes? Apprehension is common with new beginnings. If an obstacle comes up, you can modify or try something else temporarily until your circumstances change. There is no need to worry. You don’t need to give up on your dreams, but try something that works for you in the current moment.

“Remember, as long as you are breathing, it’s never too late to start a new beginning.” Unknown

No matter your age or fitness level, it’s never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Exercise and eating healthy is for every body, age and fitness level. No experience necessary!

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Rohn

The beginning is the first step to a lifestyle change that is inspired by your personal motivation. Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-orientated behaviors. Once the change “snowballs,” your choices become a part of your lifestyle.  When something becomes a habit, life doesn’t seem the same without it.
