In the past 30 years, obesity rates have doubled among children and tripled among adolescents, and the amount of physical activity in schools has drastically decreased. Our Youth Fitness Specialty Certification gives parents, coaches, and fitness and health care professionals the knowledge and skills to develop age-appropriate exercise programs, improve the overall health and well-being of children and teens, and help instill the value of physical activity at an early age.
Who is it designed for?
Becoming a Youth Fitness Specialist will help parents, youth sports coaches and other professionals in fitness, health care, recreation or education gain the knowledge and skills they need to create customized and organized fitness programs for children and teens. The curriculum addresses motor development, pediatric exercise physiology, growth-related differences in abilities, youth resistance and cardiorespiratory training, and integration of health- and skill-related activities into fitness programs.
How do I earn one?
To earn a Youth Fitness Specialty Certification, you must review all of the components listed below and take the quizzes associated with the material. Although you may complete courses for any Specialty Certification, ACE will not recognize you as a Specialist unless you also hold a current NCCA-accredited certification or an equivalent professional credential. After you complete all courses and quizzes, an ACE Specialty Certification and continuing education credits (CECs) will be uploaded into your My ACE account. Specialty Certifications do not expire, and the purchase price includes all materials and fees necessary to become a Specialist.

ACE Youth Fitness Manual
The ACE Youth Fitness Manual, written by leading researchers and authors Dr. Avery Faigenbaum and Dr. Wayne Westcott, gives fitness professionals the tools they need to engage and empower youth using creative, integrative approaches to physical activity. By designing classes that incorporate games, group activities and resistance training options, instructors can help develop an appreciation for fitness among children and teenagers they will carry into adulthood.
ACE Presents Youth Fitness
In our two-part video series, ACE-certified Health Coach and youth performance expert Brett Klika demonstrates programming and leadership for safe and effective play- and skill-based classes. Klika, named the 2013 IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year, will show how to deliver fun and engaging warm-up, agility, coordination, strength, speed and flexibility activities that are specific to certain ages, and skill and fitness levels.
ACE Youth Fitness Quiz
The ACE Youth Fitness Quiz will gauge your understanding of material you reviewed in both the ACE Youth Fitness Manual and our ACE Presents Youth Fitness video. The 50-question, multiple-choice quiz is delivered in a convenient, online format you can complete from your home or office.
The Youth Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Course consists of a comprehensive manual that addresses causes, contributing factors and fundamental issues related to physical activity and youth, and a quiz that helps gauge your knowledge of the material. Edited by Alan L. Smith and Stuart J.H. Biddle, the text breaks away from traditional thinking that places activity and sedentary behavior on a single continuum and instead focuses on how the two behaviors coexist.
