Ergogenic Aids and Steroid Precursors

Personal trainers may often field questions about dietary supplements, often those that are marketed to help athletes increase size and strength. Sometimes these dietary supplements can be contaminated with or may intentionally contain substances that are banned by different sports regulatory bodies. This module reviews: 1) Policies of sports regulatory bodies for preventing doping in sports; 2) NCAA regulations regarding dietary supplements that can and cannot be provided to athletes; 3) Information regarding third party testing to assure that dietary supplements do not contain banned substances; and 4) Scientific evidence on the efficacy for athletes and health risks associated with anabolic steroids, hormones, and prohormones.
