Effects of Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methylbutyrate (HMB)

The use of HMB has become popular among athletes as a dietary supplement and food ingredient in sports nutrition products. There is a large and complex scientific literature surrounding the use of HMB in athletic populations, as well as in the elderly and nutritionally compromised persons. This course is a video of a lecture on HMB that was given at the NSCA 2012 National Conference by Dr. Jacob Wilson from the University of Tampa. In this lecture, Dr. Wilson reviews: 1) What HMB is; 2) The potential mechanisms of action of HMB; 3) The metabolism of HMB; 4) The safety of HMB; 5) The current scientific evidence for efficacy of HMB supplementation; and 6) New research from his laboratory regarding the effects of HMB on muscle mass, strength, and recovery from intense bouts of exercise.
