SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Jan. 23, 2002 –The American Council on Exercise (ACE), America’s nonprofit fitness advocate, today announced that Mayor Dick Murphy of the City of San Diego has proclaimed Thursday, January 24 “American Council on Exercise Day.” On this day, ACE is celebrating the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art headquarters in San Diego and reintroducing itself to the residents of San Diego, its surrounding areas and the nation as its leading fitness advocate.

The Mayor and the City of San Diego have recognized a new era in ACE history. The 25,000 square-foot facility features a resource center, classrooms and a top-of-the-line fitness facility. Never before has the organization been able to utilize such a facility to educate and help motivate the public to healthier lifestyles.

“Today we find ourselves at a crossroads in the fitness revolution that began more than a quarter of a century ago. In a society with chronic illness and inactivity on the rise, the health benefits of exercise were never more apparent,” said Ken Germano, executive director of the American Council on Exercise. “I urge all of San Diego and it’s surrounding residents to utilize the American Council on Exercise as a resource.”

Despite increasing data to support the importance and value of exercise, and ongoing coordinated efforts of organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Council on Exercise (ACE), and others, a mere 20% of the U.S. population exercise regularly. The task of motivating millions of people to exercise is proving increasingly difficult as laborsaving devices and sedentary entertainments become more ubiquitous.

Established in 1985, ACE has since emerged as a significant force in the field of physical fitness, growing from a small operation to a full-service entity with a staff of more than 40.

ACE advocates healthy, active lifestyles for all segments of society and protects the public against unsafe and ineffective fitness products and instruction. The organization is the leading provider of certification and education to the professional, commercial, and retail fitness markets.

About ACE The American Council on Exercise (ACE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the benefits of physical activity and protecting consumers against unsafe and ineffective fitness products and instruction.
