If you’ve been researching your exercise options, you may have found media that uses the jargon of health but then shows the same exercises that a high school athlete would do. Great if you’re the athlete, not so much if you’re the parents or grandparents. For peers of the parents/grandparents, age-related joint changes require a bit more care than jumping on a box and heaving a barbell allow. Your motivation is also probably not as intense as a competitive athlete. You may want to do “enough” to benefit from the exercise, but not so much that you risk getting hurt. A “Safe Exercise” program protects your joints, carefully loads your bones and muscles, and finds the right level of effort for you. I opened the Optimal Exercise studio 20 years ago specifically to provide this approach without the distractions of a big box gym. Clients up to their 80s do a warm-up, then use weight stations, dumbbells, bodyweight, and finish with assisted stretching. In addition to the research I did to write books on the topic (Joint-Friendly Fitness and more), I’ve trained myself for over 50 years and experience my own age-related changes. I can relate.
