Harnessing the Power of Breath to Boost Performance and Reduce Stress

Much like squats, lunges, and bicep curls, the act of breathing is a movement. But because we all breathe automatically, we often fail to recognize that we can train our breathing to achieve specific outcomes, such as stimulating the sympathetic nervous system to accomplish a challenging task, or using slow, diaphragmatic breathing to promote recovery by upregulating the parasympathetic nervous system. Moreover, the mechanisms of breathing have a great number of peripheral effects as well, both for health and performance (such as core/spine/hip stability, organ/heart function, regulation of inflammation, regulation/delivery of oxygen, and elimination of metabolic waste).

In this video training, you will learn the science of breathwork, looking closely at the physiology of respiration, and then diving into the mechanics which are responsible for inspiration/expiration, gas exchange and physiological regulation. As you gain a greater understanding of how these mechanisms organize themselves, you will be better equipped to orchestrate breath to stimulate specific muscles and mechanics for various tasks. For example, applying the mechanics of breathwork to foster greater core stability during specific exercises in order to support the spine.

Led by Michol Dalcourt, the Founder and CEO of the Institute of Motion, an applied health and human performance company, this course gives you the tools you need to deliver an exceptional training experience for every client. By learning and applying the simple breathwork techniques in this video training, you’ll be well-equipped to empower your clients to discover a deep focus and stability no matter what challenges they face.

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Describe the physiology of respiration to create a foundation of understanding
  • Identify the muscles and mechanisms responsible for both inspiration and expiration
  • Explore the mechanics of breathwork to create better stability for various postures and motor tasks

Workshop Policies and Procedures

In the event that the American Council on Exercise (ACE) would cancel a workshop for ANY reason, a full refund will be issued to the participant. ACE is NOT responsible for any other expenses the participant may have incurred.

All of ACE’s live workshops are non-refundable programs unless approved by ACE’s Educational Services Team. For questions, please call 800-825-3636. A $50 cancellation fee will be applied to any approved cancellations.

Any participant who is registered for an ACE workshop and needs to reschedule their workshop to a later date listed will be subject to a $50 transfer fee and MUST contact ACE’s Educational Services Team at 800-825-3636 to verify that a reschedule date is available.

Transfer of Registration

ACE cannot transfer a participant’s registration to another participant unless approved by ACE’s Educational Services Team. Transferring a registration to another participant is subject to a $100 transfer fee.

Hotels and Accommodations

ACE does not provide hotel and accommodation recommendations for our workshop events. Google is a great resource to search for hotels in the area of the workshop location.

Transfer of Registration

In the event of inclement weather, all workshops will be held as scheduled at the discretion of ACE. Pre-registered participants who are unable to attend their scheduled workshop may reschedule without incurring additional charges so long as their request has been received 7 days following the originally scheduled date. No refunds will be available. In the event that ACE cancels a workshop due to bad weather, participants will be given a full refund or option to reschedule (if another date is available).
