Periodization in Training

A structured and systematic training programme gradually prepares the athlete for the rigours of competition by planning of short and long-term training focus to include; varying training loads, incorporating adequate rest and recovery in regulated amounts to maximize the athletes well being and performance. Periodization is divided into ‘duration categories or phases’ that allow the prescription of training from a broad to a more precise focus. To accomplish this there are three training cycles; • A microcycle • A mesocycle • A macrocycle These principles are just as important for the fitness athlete as they are for the professional competitor and are one of the key principles to continued athletic improvement and overall health. Physiologically we know it is not possible to improve an athlete’s level of conditioning across several areas at one time and that training needs to be planned with a specific emphasis on improving one parameter while other areas are maintained or rested.
