Master the hip hinge to build posterior chain strength, improve performance, and coach safer, more effective workouts.
The hip hinge is a foundational movement pattern that powers many of the most effective strength and performance exercises. In Hip Hinge Training for Performance, fitness professionals learn the biomechanics of the hip hinge and how to coach and program common hinge-based movements such as deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, kettlebell swings, and single-leg variations.
Through clear exercise demonstrations and applied instruction, the course shows how to teach proper technique and improve client outcomes. Participants will also explore current research comparing different hip hinge exercises and how those variations influence muscle activation and performance. The course translates research into practice with simple programming strategies, training templates, and sample routines that can be immediately integrated into client workouts. By the end of the course, professionals will have the knowledge and confidence to design hinge-focused workouts that strengthen the glutes, hamstrings, and lower back while supporting functional movement and long-term performance.
Guided by the expertise of Amy Ashmore, PhD, who holds a doctorate in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Austin and is the author of Timing Resistance Training (published by Human Kinetics), the course translates research into practical application. Dr. Ashmore has developed more than 50 training programs used by strength coaches as well as physical and occupational therapists, bringing both performance and rehabilitation perspectives to hinge training. She also serves as adjunct faculty at the College of Southern Nevada and is a continuing education provider based in Las Vegas.
In this course, you will learn how to:
- Analyze the biomechanics and functional kinesiology of the hip hinge movement
- Demonstrate and coach key hip hinge exercises including deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts
- Apply current research to select exercises that maximize gluteal and hamstring activation
- Design training sessions and sample routines that effectively incorporate hip hinge exercises
