About Jane Torbinski: My name is Jane Torbinski, I’m a Personal Trainer certified by the American Council on Exercise (ACE). I discovered fitness later in life. To put it mildly, I did not have a healthy lifestyle in my younger years. As I got older I began looking at things differently. I was what I call skinny fat. What I mean is, I was thin but I had little muscle mass. I knew the statistics about osteoporosis, that being small framed, I was a high risk, that building muscle helps build stronger bones(even after 40!) I knew that after fifty we lose 1-2% of muscle every year. I also knew that being skinny was no guarantee of a healthy heart. But mostly, I knew I did not want to age like that. I wanted to get strong and fit and I wanted to help others do the same. After a 23yr career I made a change and started a new career in fitness. I created Pride Fitness in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the LGBT community. Heart disease is the #1 killer among women and research tells us that lesbian and bisexual women are at a higher risk for certain problems than our heterosexual counterparts. But we can protect ourselves from heart disease by not smoking, controlling our blood pressure and cholesterol, exercising, and eating well. These things also help prevent type 2 diabetes which is a leading cause of heart disease. The mission of Pride Fitness is to help lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle and to encourage LGBT women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. Helping my clients reach their goals and sharing in the experience is my motivation. I understand the demands of a career and family obligations, sometimes just getting to the gym is the biggest hurdle. And I understand the idea of gym-timidation, that’s why Pride Fitness is mobile.
