Everything has changed, except the name! This all-new manual has been completely overhauled and features an increased focus on the psychological aspects of weight management, as well as more in-depth coverage of the physiology of obesity and the techniques of lifestyle coaching. References and suggested readings have been updated throughout, as have the statistical information and guidelines.
This is not a revision of the existing manual, but rather an
entirely new textbook designed to meet the day-to-day challenges of today’s lifestyle & weight management consultants. The
Lifestyle + Weight Management Consultant Manual, 2nd edition, is broken into seven sections:
Exercise Science — This section, which covers anatomy, applied biomechanics, physiology and kinesiology is entirely new to the 2nd Edition, reflecting the need for a deeper understanding of the human body and how it functions both at rest and during exercise.
Behavioral Science — This section covers health behavior psychology as well as counseling, communication, and group dynamics, which form the core of the LWMC’s work.
Nutritional Science — This section greatly expands upon the nutrition information provided in the 1st Edition. The three chapters that comprise this section go beyond basic nutrition to provide practical techniques for applying this information. A cursory understanding of nutrition is not enough to successfully help clients manage their weight. The third chapter in this section, Current Concepts in Weight Management, examines popular diets and pharmacological agents used for weight loss, in addition to discussing the health risks associated with eating disorders.
Screening, Assessment, and Referral — This section takes what had been a single chapter in the first edition and breaks it into three separate chapters, each of which tackles a separate component. LWMCs spend a lot of their time interviewing, screening and counseling their clients, and the detailed information provided in this section reflects the importance and complexity of these processes. In addition, the referral process is outlined for the reader—from identifying clients who require referral and determining which healthcare professional is most appropriate, to the actual process of working and communicating with that healthcare professional.
Program Design and Implementation — This section, like the others, greatly expands upon what had been offered in the 1st Edition. What had been covered in one chapter is now broken into five chapters:
- • Weight-management Programming
- • Exercise Programming
- • Nutritional Programming
- • Lifestyle Modification and Behavior Change
- • Motivation and Adherence
Together these five chapters present a comprehensive approach to working with clients through all stages of behavior change. In addition, this content should help LWMCs hold onto clients that might otherwise quit the program or cancel a club membership.
Special Considerations — This section delves into the physiology of obesity and how it impacts a client’s lifestyle and ability to exercise. In addition, a chapter on special populations and medical conditions is included, covering everything from hypertension and diabetes to pregnancy and low-back pain.
Legal, Professional and Ethical Considerations — This final section discusses the legal issues that impact LWMCs and the fitness industry as a whole. Of particular importance is the information on staying within the scope of practice and securing appropriate insurance.
