Editors Review: Vibram FiveFingers Classic

Editor's rating:

Vibram has been one of the driving forces behind the growing popularity of barefoot running. Believing that barefoot exercise is more natural and comfortable, many exercisers are opting for a minimalist shoe that mimics the feel of barefoot exercise while also protecting the foot from abrasions or other injuries.

The Vibram FiveFingers Classic is one of several designs Vibram offers that adhere to this basic principle. This shoe features a sculpted, non-marking sole that wraps around the bottom and sides of the foot and a stretch polyamide fabric that envelopes the toes and top of the foot. An elastic band that fastens at the heel allows users to adjust the coverage and fit. Like gloves, each toe has its own “slot.”

Needless to say, these shoes take some getting used to and will not appeal to everyone. They provide surprisingly good arch support and the sole is thick enough to minimize the feel of rocks or pebbles underfoot. (It also looks durable enough to withstand glass, but we did not try to confirm this.)

Water-resistant and machine washable, the Vibram FiveFingers is ideal for walking along rocky shorelines or climbing over boulders. And, for those who are convinced of the benefits, they provide adequate coverage for running long distances. Although the manufacturer recommends this shoe for yoga and Pilates, most people will still prefer to perform these activities in bare feet.

One of the challenges we encountered with the Vibram FiveFingers is that its molded shape makes it difficult to fit those who don’t have “standard” shaped feet. For example, individuals with a longer second toe or a predominant big toe may find the shoes don’t fit correctly or feel uncomfortable. Likewise, the high heel tab may irritate those with heel spurs or other issues.

What we liked:

  • Cutting-edge design and high-tech materials
  • Water-resistant and machine washable
  • Ideal for walking along rocky shorelines or climbing over boulders

What we didn’t like:

  • Appropriate only for individuals with “standard” shaped feet
  • Requires considerable time to get used to the feel of the shoe

Comments: I absolutely love these shoes. I think they are a great solution to the problem so many people face-fallen arches. In the past, we have been taught to wear shoes that give us great support; I agree with this when performing during a sport like basketball or volleyball, etc., but during everyday life we should be able to support our own body weight with just our feet! These minimalistic shoes allow us to rebuild the strength in our feet so we don't have to worry about falling arches as we get older. Maintaining our health and preventing problems is what we are striving to do as fitness professionals and I highly recommend these does to all of my clients. I wear them while training my clients and at the very least it is a great conversation piece!

Comments: Love these shoes. I have ran barefoot off and on over the years and running in these shoes feels much the same. However just like barefoot running if you use these shoes you have to work into it gradually. Your feet have to work much harder so i don't suggest going out and running your normal run the first time you put them on. I have not tried them in the gym with the weights.

Comments: I love my VFFs I wear them around for walking and daily activities. I'm a bellydancer so I love being barefoot and I'm used to dancing barefoot. I think these are great for conditioning classes and I like them for Zumba too. I agree that if someone is not used to being barefoot they should start slowly. Being barefoot changes the way you move your feet and legs. In dance classes like Zumba you'll feel your calves working a lot more in these shoes. I do love being able to feel and "grip" the floor with my toes. I feel more balanced and natural. I also get feedback from my feet when I am too flat-footed and can correct my footing. One problem is they get more smelly than your average shoe so regular washes and foot powder or baking soda may be needed.

Comments: I like the 5 Finger Vibrans and find them energizing to wear around the house. By seperating the toes I feel some renewed strength in my feet and improved balance. They are great doing running drills in the grass or sand. I liked them trail running, however, I can not endorse for running long on pavement. Build up slowly! I don't believe that these can fix bad biomechanics and may be better if you are already in good running shape. They are fun to wear and will be conversation starters. The book "born to run" will come up among the running population. Hard to refute barefoot running if you never had shoes. Bottom line, be wise, have fun and rotate your footwear.

Comments:

I've been wanting a pair of these ever since I first saw them in '07; I finally got a pair and love working out in them.  For general strength and core training workouts these shoes provide a lot of mobility for the foot which can reduce strain in the hips and low-back.  While I have used the 5-fingers to do sprints on the grass, and walk for more than 2 miles at a time, I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable doing any distance running in them, at least not until I have more time for my feet/ankles to adapt and get stronger.  Overall I'm really enjoying my 5 fingers and highly recommend them as an extremely effective shoe for strength and/or core training workouts; I really dig using them when I do kettlebell and TRX suspension training they really allow me to feel like I'm working out barefoot (which isn't allowed in my health club)

Comments:

Given concerns with bad posture and how we are losing significant proprioceptive feedback from our feet (which promotes bad posture), I wear the vibrams to re-establish that feedback and make me more conciously aware of my posture and stability. I love their versatility (wear them on land, in water, swimming, walking on rocks, in beach sand, etc.). While they advertise you can run in them. I have tried it with mixed impressions. However, I use them for everyday wear (garners some interesting looks at times) and for weight training.

Fitting each toe into the shoe can be challenging, but it gets easier and the shoes can be washed to reduce shoe odor.
