Editors Review: P90X® Extreme Home Fitness Training System

Editor's rating:

Although it has been available for years, the P90X® Extreme Home Fitness Training System experienced a significant boost in popularity last year when singer Sheryl Crow attributed her sleek physique to the ubiquitous infomercial product. Suddenly, P90X infomercials were airing round-the-clock and questions about its efficacy were pouring into the ACE offices. It seemed as if everyone has been thinking about trying P90X and wondering if it would deliver on its promise to get them “absolutely ripped” in 90 days.

It is clear from the infomercial that this is not an exercise system for beginners or those who have been sedentary (these folks are encouraged to try the less-intense Power 90 Program first). Nor does it equivocate when it comes to the time and dedication required to achieve results. This program, which features 12 DVD workouts ranging in length from 60 to 90 minutes, is not for the faint at heart (or the time-constrained). Included are workouts for specific body parts (e.g., chest and back, shoulders and arms, abdominals), interval-style cardio and kenpo (featuring martial arts–based moves) workouts, and stretch and yoga workouts. A detailed fitness plan dictates the order and schedule of workouts depending on individual goals.

We were impressed with the pre-workout instructions to perform a fitness self-test to determine appropriate resistance/intensity levels, as well as the coaching cues used throughout the workouts that encourage participants to work at his or her own pace and take breaks when needed. Even so, only an individual who is already somewhat fit should attempt this program because many of the exercises are very advanced and the workouts are intense.

Promoting the concept of “muscle confusion” to accelerate results, most of the workouts move very quickly from one exercise to the next, which necessarily increases the risk for injury. In fact, even the exercisers on the DVD start to show poor form when they get fatigued. Not surprisingly, host Tony Horton’s solution to participants’ fatigue is a whole range of supplements, shakes and bars. The practice of upselling is nothing new, but the recommendations to drink their shakes and take their pills can become a distraction. (To be fair, Horton does offer other tips, such as drinking enough water and getting adequate sleep, as well.)

We found that those who were able to stick with the program for the recommended 90 days were generally pleased with their results. They credit the variety and structure of the workouts, as well as the convenience of working out at home, for their enhanced fitness levels, and recommend keeping track of one’s progress and modifying the exercises as needed.

As advertised, P90X is an intense home exercise program that can produce results, but only for those who are somewhat fit already and can maintain a heavy training schedule and avoid injury. The intensity and dedication required may be discouraging to those who are less fit or who don’t have the time to exercise 60-90 minutes per day. Individuals with any physical limitations or who have been sedentary should be encouraged to choose a more appropriate program.

What we liked:

  • Recommends a fitness self-test to determine appropriate resistance/intensity levels
  • Coaching cues encourage participants to work at a self-selected pace and take breaks when needed
  • Variety and structure of workouts enhance adherence and reduce boredom
  • Participants are urged to track progress and modify exercises as needed

What we didn’t like:

  • Most of the workouts move very quickly from one exercise to the next, increasing the risk of injury
  • Upselling of supplements and foods is distracting
  • Not appropriate for those without a baseline levels of fitness
  • Intensity and dedication required may be discouraging to those who don’t have time to exercise 60 -90 minutes per day

Comments: While P90X is better than many dvd programs out there in some respects, unfortunately there's enough things that concern me regarding safety that I find it difficult to ever recommend. I still gave it three stars because it is okay but I personally wouldn't actually suggest anyone do P90X (and I did personally do the full program when it first came out because I wanted to give it a "fair shake" but I substituted other exercises for those I felt were not safe, something less experienced folks wouldn't be able to do).

Comments: I began at a very low-fitness level with P90X. I did not adhere to the program for the full 90 days, however I was motivated after using the program for 60 days to transition to the gym. I still periodically use parts of the program when I'm running short on time and unable to make it to the gym as getting ready, driving to and from and checking in, stowing in my locker and waiting for the equipment to become available for me to use takes up more time than starting a DVD. It gave me the confidence and results I needed to maneuver into a fit lifestyle, in which I've even began my studies to become a personal trainer myself. I think that ANYONE could do it if they're determined, whether fit or not, because for those that are not, the program is designed to allow for many modifications in order to work yourself up to performing the full workout in perfect form. Also, to add to form; a person that still has perfect form during their last set is not challenging themselves. Not to say working out with poor form is in any way safe to muscles, tendons, or joints, however, to do a full workout cycle with ease is also an indicator that you're not achieving the maximum benefit from the workout. The P90X system allows modifications to eliminate the possibility of plateau in a 90 day cycle.

Comments: Although this video shows some good exercises and protocols, P90x really misses the mark on fun. I believe that if one were to just go out and perform any type of physical exercise for 60-90 min per day for 90 days (The protocol for P90x); they could achieve similar results that P90x promises. I gave P90x a rating of 3 stars just because I liked some of the exercise progressions however, I found some videos to be unimaginably boring. Remember, there is no replacement for hard work and consistency, and the promise of getting a ripped body by working out at home, although possible, is highly unlikely. This program is great for someone who is just getting started in exercise and fitness and may be intimidated to exercise for all to see. It is nice to have a truly private instructor, and I do believe that it could help some but, for people already involved in fitness, steer clear. Just get your dog and your running shoes and get outside and make fitness happen.

Comments: P90X is definately a tough workout, not for the beginner. I started P90X after a winter of gaining about 10-15 pounds, figuring I could lose some weight for the summer, all while getting "ripped" in the process. For some backround, I am a runner and an avid weightlifter, so I figured this program wouldn't be too bad to start cold turkey. The videos definately are tough, and it kicked my butt. I struggled to finish the first week of videos, as I was unaccustomed to the high reps and small rest periods. Many of the workouts involved moves that were variations of the normal exercises a person does. For example, instead of performing just one type of biceps curl per workout, the biceps are exhausted with a variety of different movements and weights. The cardio videos were also tough. During plyometrics, be prepared to clean up the puddle of sweat on the floor after you are done. Also, the yoga is great, but long, about 90 minutes. When you are first starting, 90 minutes of yoga is tiring. Overall, the videos were tough, but after a few weeks, the cardio videos got boring, as the moves never switch and your body gets accustomed to the workout. The strength training is better, as it rotates around a couple of videos for each body part. Now to the key of any exercise program: the nutrition guide. The guide is pretty short, only a few pages. It includes many options of what you should eat, when you should eat, and alternatives to eating habits you may currently have. However, I found it pretty uninspiring to follow, and I quickly converted to an old diet I used with success in the past. For such an expensive program, I was disappointed with the diet. The workout sheets were very structured and provided a way to track progress. Again, the diet portion of the sheets were disappointing, as they provided a small box to write what you ate for the day, along with a "Diet? Y/N" comment at the bottom. C'mon now, I paid for more than that. Overall, the program is very good, the videos are challenging, and I would recommend it to someone with a good aerobic base and good muscular endurance and strength, as all of these are needed to complete the workouts. I was able to lose about 10 pounds during my time on P90X, and I would say I was semi-pleased with the challenging workouts. The lack of variety on the cardio workouts was a little bummer though. 7/10.

Comments: I have completed the 90 day program for P90X and I believe it is the best home workout out there. I go back to the workouts all the time incorporating them into other workouts because they are so complete for the body parts worked on each video. I haven't attempted another 90 day complete program yet, but I haven't found anything else that works as good.

Comments: I started this at age 50 and have done it for 11 months. I went on to the P90X advance as well and cannot say enough about the lean muscle and beautiful shape my body is in. I have always been small and now I look the best I have in over 20 years and I feel great as well. I can put on a bikini and know that I look great for the first time since I was a young girl. This is not for beginners and does require a commitment, but what type of serious work out that you expect incredible results from doesn't? Please do this it really works!!

Comments: In terms of exercise, this product provides a wide variety of workouts for a fitness person, especially when the person needs something new in their workout routine. The exercise sections are great and Horton modifies most of the exercises for those that cannot perform them that well. I liked how the editor's review pointed out the aspect of quickly moving from one exercise to another, because it does increase the chances of injury, especially for those that are beginners. A counter-argument towards that would be that it is a home DVD workout program, os in reality, it is the owner's role to take breaks when they want to. Even with that, unfortunately, people who are not accustomed to physical activity have a higher chance of injury with pushing themselves too hard or perform the exercises with bad form to compensate for more repetitions. Although most of the exercises are highly advance (like some of the yoga poses and ab exercises), this product is really meant for those that have experience with exercise, and those that are physically fit to perform those exercises. The aspect of "getting ripped in 90-days" is what most people get into because of the somewhat quick result towards a toned body. The general public does not realize the the exercises provided only account to 20% of the weight loss, but than again, this product is not meant just for weight loss. Just like any other fitness product, including a nutritional guide is the aspect that really helps the owners loss weight. Unfortunately, owners don't realize that aspect and only give praise to the product itself, not to their new approach to nutrition and incerasing physical activity. All in all, I think this product is great, but for those that are experienced. If newly, precontemplating individuals think about jumping into this product, or others like it, i would say ask a near by personal trainer first. Better to ask a person with experience than jumping into something that you have no idea what you are doing.

Comments: I think the editors did a fair job in evaluating this product, although I would like to see more stars. I understand, however, that their concern is that this is not a small commitment product, and it is not to be undertaken by a couch potato. That does put it out of reach of many folks. However... This is the real deal. These workouts, and the methodology of "muscle confusion", will get results. I am 42 and have never been in this kind of shape in my life. I look great and feel great, thanks to P90X. With respect to "upselling" products - yes, they do that, but I have to say a recovery drink, to replace electrolytes, is a great idea. These workouts are very demanding. My heart rate on one of them stays between 142 and 155 for 50 minutes. You'll burn a lot of calories - you need a post work-out drink.

Comments:

I think if you are looking for something that is pretty straight forwarded for a workout program, P90X can be for you.  It's a difficult program and not meant for beginners or as a weight loss program.  Always watch your form as some of the participants don't always show it.  It is a nice feature to turn off the audio because the music and Tony Horton can get annoying.

Comments: I absolutely LOVE P90X. I am an unlikely P90X user. I started using it two years ago at the age of 50 to deal with menopause. It completely got rid of any need for hormore replacement therapy. I feel so great with it. It is totally addictive and leads to instant gratification in terms of energy. I had never exercised before but have never been sedentary. I found it is manageable if you are motivated, but it IS a workout. The modifications work quite well. P90X along with great guidance from a book called YOUNGER NEXT YEAR (and the vesion FOR WOMEN) is amazing. Although I don't use P90X to lose weight because I'm relatively thin, it toned me nicely (I lost in the right places). If you don't want to hear Tony Horton advertise the supplements, there is an option that allows you to hear major exercise cues only without (I play music on the radio at the same time).
