ACE-certified Success Stories

Lori Lowell
ACE-certified Group Fitness Instructor
Gold's Gym
Falls Church, Virginia

1st Runner-up, 2004 ACE Fitness Director of the Year

After receiving her degree in dance in 1982, Lori danced professionally while she working as an assistant to the East Coast Counsel Lobbyist for Nike on Capitol Hill. In conjunction with her administrative duties she began performing fitness promotions for Nike in the Washington, D.C. area. It was then that Lori found a love for fitness and realized she could use her dance and choreographic skills to teach group fitness classes. It wasn’t long before Lori found a strong passion for teaching group fitness.

She began working for an independently owned health club as the Group Fitness Director. Over the next 10 years Lori continually grew her teaching and directorial skills while teaching at a variety of fitness facilities. However, her priority remained with her first health club employer and her position as a fitness director and instructor. In 1995 the facility converted to join the Gold’s Gym franchise. Lori and her husband Jeremy became partners of the newly transformed facility located in Lake Ridge, Virginia, 20 miles south of Washington, D.C. In 1998 their partner decided to leave Virginia and build clubs in Orlando, Florida. Lori and Jeremy took the opportunity to become sole owners and purchased the remaining shares of the facility.

The club, which was originally 16,000 square feet, was in desperate need of a face lift to keep a competitive edge in the rapidly growing health club industry. Lori and her husband had a clear vision for their business which included building a club that could serve the community in an array of fitness modalities. They built a new facility which included three group fitness studios, a rowing fitness center, juice bar, facial and massage room, outdoor area for basketball and outdoor training, a Youth Sportaerobic Program (developed and run by four Brazilian Sportaerobic champions), a student scholarship program for high school seniors, a Pilates reformer studio, a large free motion fitness area, and a warm and friendly environment. Their mission statement is: “To create the best possible fitness facility for all populations”—and that’s exactly what they did. They searched throughout the industry to find the best team of trainers, instructors and support staff in order to cultivate a special culture and feel that embraces the needs of the community from youth to geriatrics, from fit to deconditioned, and from special populations to high-end athletes. Their vision was completed and opened in June of 2000.

In February of 2003 the Lowells opened their second facility in Lorton, Virginia which embraces the same philosophy and culture.

Lori is not only a franchisee of two clubs, but she also serves as the National Group Fitness Director for Gold’s Gym International where she manages the Group Exercise Directors of 39 corporate owned gyms. She states that her team of directors is second to none and an amazing group of professionals to work with. Lori has led the company to develop consistent programming and group exercise tracking reports within the chain and assists not only the corporate facilities but fellow franchisees as well. She absolutely loves all aspects of her work, from managing and administrating her own facilities to working with her fellow corporate team members. In addition, Lori serves on the Advertising Committee for Gold’s Gym and served from 1999-2002 as President of the Gold’s Gyms of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area which totals 40 clubs. She still actively teaches daily in her own clubs as well as other area Gold’s Gyms. Lori holds different certifications and speaks regularly at industry conventions on the topics of group exercise and programming.

Over the past five years her clubs have received awards in the following categories: Best Youth Programs, Best Group Exercise Programs, Most Improved Club, Best Advertising, Visionary of the Year, First Runner-up for the 2004 NOVA 7 Student Scholarship Program, and First Runner-up for the 2004 ACE Fitness Director of the Year.

Lori and her husband Jeremy live in Falls Church, Virginia with their three children, Ian, Ariel and Alec.
