This course is designed to educate students on the nutritional needs of competitive athletes. Some of the topics covered are sport-specific nutrition; aerobic and anaerobic metabolism; the onset of fatigue; carbohydrate, protein, and fat requirements; vitamins and minerals; hydration; the glycemic index; pre-, during-, and post-exercise consumption; ergogenic aids; weight management; and body composition. This course was written by Dr. Brian Biagioli, executive director of the National Council on Strength and Fitness and graduate program director of Exercise Physiology at Florida International University, along with his colleague Dr. Wesley Smith, director of certification at the NCSF. This program currently satisfies the 10 continuing education units (CEUs) per two-year term required by the NCSF for recertification as a personal trainer.
