This course was designed to assist fitness instructors and personal trainers in providing weight management and dietary guidance to healthy individuals. Currently, more than half of U.S. adults are overweight and nearly one quarter of these people are obese. This has become the #1 public health concern in the United States. Many misconceptions about obesity exist. It is often seen as a choice or as evidence of overindulgence rather than a disease. Obesity is not a single disorder, but a condition with multiple causes. The physiologic, biochemical, and genetic evidence is overwhelming that obesity is a complex disorder. Contributing causes include inheritance and environmental, cultural, socioeconomic, and psychological factors. Ultimately obesity is the result of a mismatch between energy intake and expenditure. SCW developed this specialty certificate to help fitness professionals better understand the causes of overweight and obesity, and different treatment modalities and approaches. Our intent is to familiarize fitness professionals with the challenges of helping people manage their weight and the role of the fitness instructor in supporting this process
