This 3 part workshop will begin with Dr. Michael O'Brien (Medical Director, The Micheli Center, attending physician in the Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital) discuss the most common injuries for the shoulder, knee, and lower back during training and potential strategies for preventing them. Attendees will learn how muscular imbalances, as well as weak and tight muscles are contributing factors towards injuries in the shoulder, knee, and lower back and how to gauge clients limits and know when it’s time to take a break. Then Dr. Pierre A. d’Hemecourt MD, (Medical Director, The Micheli Center, Director of Primary Care Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital & Co-Medical Director of the Boston Marathon) will discuss running injury prevention. Attendees will learn: Impact force is a determinant of injury patterns, how to generally assess gait patterns associated with higher rates of injury, understanding common poor gait adaptations and assess common strength and flexibility deficits in the running athlete. In the afternoon the Micheli Center's Certified Athletic Trainers will will lead a hands on injury prevention class for the shoulder, knee, and lower back taken from the morning’s presentations. Attendees will have the opportunity to demo the center’s testing equipment using 3D Motion capture analysis, Equilibrate balance tester, dynamometer’s, Vertec vertical jump and FMS screening.
