Motivational interviewing (MI) is a well researched, state-of-the-art communication method suited to fitness professionals for their promoting major behavioral changes, such as adopting a healthy diet, developing exercise as a part of lifestyle and losing weight. This course will illustrate the required paradigm shift of the professional towards a client-centered focus on enhancing one’s intrinsic motivation to change, with links to research that supports its efficacy. It will provide the necessary skills to a) transform the shame and guilt that often accompany failed attempts at change; and b) normalize, explore and resolve ambivalence. The basic skills of MI (active listening and 10 kinds of reflections) will be taught through demonstration, role plays, and case examples from participants.
