Course Description

The Fitness Math continuing education course helps personal trainers and other fitness professionals review critical math skills and formulae needed to pass the ACE Personal Trainer certification exam and develop effective client training programs.

  • Does the thought of performing calculations without a calculator during the ACE certification exam make you break out into a cold sweat?
  • Are you confident that you can determine body composition goals, target heart rate, energy expenditure and food composition through nutrition label analysis?

Make sure you're prepared for the ACE certification exam and your role as a personal trainer. You may have learned these computations in school, but like most of us, you're lost without a calculator! Here's your chance to master the math. Learn how to perform essential calculations for effective goal-setting and exercise program design.

Topics covered include:
  • Converting percentages to decimals
  • Units of measure and conversion
    • Standard and metric
    • Mass, distance and volume
  • Applying common formulae used in fitness assessments
    • Body Mass Index (BMI)
    • Body composition
    • Waist-to-hip ratio
  • Performing calculations for cardiovascular program design
    • Heart rate training zones using the age-predicted HR Max and Karvonen formulae
  • Energy expenditure based on oxygen consumption
  • Nutrition
    • Caloric value of food based on levels of macronutrients

*The ACE Personal Trainer Manual is a recommended resource used during the course.

Course Objectives
  • Correctly perform calculations involving multiplying and dividing with decimals, and determining percentages without the use of a calculator.
  • Calculate target heart rate utilizing different formulae and available data.
  • Assist your client in setting body composition goals through calculations related to BMI, body fat percentage, lean weight and total body weight. Determine the nutrient and calorie composition of various food items.

Comments: I just wish that it would save where you left off. I had to do it over and over because it doesn't clue you in to where you are in the course(how many slides to finish) nor pick uup where you left off.

Comments: The first time I did not realize we were being tested and went back and forth so I failed, took it again- passed 98% but it didn't register with ACE so I took it a 3rd time by reopening it from the website- I passed again bc I wrote out my answers thinking just in cases. This CEC took WAY WAY tooooooo long. NOT WORTH IT!!!!

Comments: It was a little glitchy. One frame in particular would skip straight to the question without letting me read the information. All together, though, it was a very helpful refresher.

Comments: The course covered the material very well and very thoroughly. The only issue I had was not being able to save where I was and pick up later on. I had to retake the entire quiz after I had completed about 75% of it. Other than that, great course.

Comments: Firstly I suggest this teaching tool have bookmarks, so I can focus on specific formulas. Also, more examples of the Mets calculation. And finally,in the Mets example, where does the denominator 200 come from? I looked in the book, but could not ID it's source or purpose. Thank you, Mary b FROM ACE: Thanks for the feedback! The METs formula is a standardized, validated formula, so the number 200 was derived as a part of the validation process from the research team that developed the formula. The focus of the Fitness Math course is to teach how to apply math in common formulas seen in the fitness industry and not to focus on any one, specific formula. The METs formula was used to demonstrate how a fitness professional can use math to calculate a client’s caloric expenditure for a given workout. For more details please refer to the ACE Personal Trainer manual, specifically chapter 7- Cardiovascular training. You can find tables showing the METs for a number of activities on www.fitness.gov, you have to dig around a little bit to find the info, but it can be very useful. Finally, keep an eye on the ACE website because we will be developing more online continuing education on how to implement exercise program design for cardiovascular training over the course of the next year.

Comments: There are a few glitches that need to be fixed, but very helpful for the most part. Question 14 gives the wrong answer although the solution shown is correct. Question 19 does not have a next button but will continue on once you have answered it. The explanation before question 20 doesn't show long enough to read it through, so you have to keep clicking back to read the whole thing. Comments: This course was helpful with the formulas, but you'll have to pay close attention. Unfortunately, there were several (3 that I found) mistakes. For instance, the bubble answer to question #14 is wrong, but the explanation of problem is correct. So, if you get it right, you actually get marked wrong. Question #19, the answer is wrong, and on the explanation of exercise expenditure, there is a mistake where 3.16L is written as 3.16 mL. These mistakes are extremely confusing and should be corrected. FROM ACE: Thank you for alerting us to the technical issues within the course. It has been thoroughly reviewed and revised. We appreciate your feedback to resolve this matter.
