Getting my ACE certification in 1998 was like getting my "credibility calling card." An ACE certification lets employers and clients know that you are highly qualified for job, and mine helped open the door to a training career at the Kirkwood/Webster YMCA in Kirkwood, Missouri.

Thanks to ACE, I am very confident in my abilities and have received a lot of practical experience, continuing education, and the latest information from the continually changing face of the fitness industry.

I train people in their homes as well as at other health and fitness facilities. I carry stability balls, tubing, a BOSU, dumbbells and other equipment with me for my "Fitness to Go" clients. I work with all types of populations: athletes, older adults, teens, people with fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and other types of special needs.

I often work in synergy with physical therapists, doctors, and other professionals, helping people make the transfer from health care to the fitness facility or people recovering from an injury or joint replacement. Since 1998, I have had the unique and wonderful opportunity to help some very special people. I love working with people one on one.

I am also an ACE Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach. In 2000, I was asked to develop a program for the inactive population at the Kirkwood/Webster YMCA that is still in place today, which helps people get off the couch in and into lifestyle habits they can live with for a lifetime.

I do personal training about 35 to 40 hours per week, plus research. I like to use the philosophy of a mutually collaborative relationship, one of shared responsibility between myself and each of my clients. I believe that it is all about quality of life, being able to do the activities you enjoy for your lifetime. I am very passionate, upbeat and non-judgmental with my clients. I like to have a lot of fun while we get the work done.

Some things I would like to impart to people considering the field of personal training:

  1. Get the credentials – like an ACE certification.

  2. Know your clientele; their needs, goals, personalities and what motivates them. When necessary, do the research!

  3. Let your personality shine through and develop a style people will talk about and want to refer.

  4. Keep up on current fitness industry trends and research. Things change and are updated constantly.

  5. Be a good role model and let your life bear witness to the principles you are trying to teach.

  6. Remain teachable.

ACE asked me to share my story in part after a profile of me and my career ran in the St. Louis Post Dispatch, entitled "Trainer Gets His Life in Shape." The story focused on some of the difficulties I had growing up and later on in life as a professional musician. These experiences made me who I am today, and that path ultimately led me to where I am now.

I also started a non-profit organization that mentors "at risk" young people. To me, wellness is about changing your lifestyle and becoming what you are meant to become. ACE has helped me do just that, and I am proud to be an ACE-certified Fitness Professional.
