This module is designed to accompany Carbohydrates in Exercise and Recovery-Module 2. This module contains applied information on the glycemic index concept and how it can be used to improve performance and postexercise recovery. In the section on carbohydrates and performance, there is information on how exercise intensity modifies the oxidation of carbohydrate for fuel in muscles and what the scientific research says about the effects on carbohydrate for improving physical performance. Finally, dietary recommendations for carbohydrate intake in active individuals are provided. This includes information on: 1) daily total carbohydrate intakes; 2) carbohydrate intakes before, during, and after exercise; and 3) meal planning tips and strategies for distributing carbohydrate throughout the day so that the individual can stay appropriately fueled.
