  • According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, 20% of the US population over age 60 and 10% of those over age 20 had diabetes in 2005 – and that number is steadily growing. With the increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes, personal trainers are more likely to have clients with this chronic disease. This course will help you understand how to work safely and effectively with persons diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Learn how:

    • diabetes affects the body,
    • acute and regular exercise impacts metabolic function and overall health in individuals with diabetes,
    • to prevent and manage the unique risks associated with exercise in this population,
    • to design a safe and effective aerobic and strength training program.

    Course Objectives

    • Understand the basic pathophysiology of diabetes.
    • Discuss the short- term and long- term benefits of exercise in the management of diabetes
    • Describe the elements of a cardiovascular and strength training program for individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
    • Identify prevention and response strategies to hypoglycemia and other risks of exercise for individuals with diabetes

Overall, it was a short but useful material, which covered all information that you need to know. There was a case study at the end. The only thing that concerns me was that the sources used in this chapter were mainly from the 90s. Some information might have been outdated.

The webinar is misleading, it appears as something to listen and follow along- but it is a chapter in a unknown book, and questions are not straight forward because there could be more than one answer.

Diabetes is a dangerous national epidemic. Professionals with a good understanding of the disease and the know-how to help clients manage or prevent type 2 diabetes are much in need to help combat this increasingly common disease. The class was thorough and concise.

good info, a little long-winded however. on the test, one of my answers was marked incorrect, but there was no "correct" answer provided.

ACE RESPONSE: Thank you for the feedback Lauren. An ACE Representative will be contacting you shortly.

It would be nice to know how to apply this in rural/low-income areas where lots of change is needed for people to manage their diabetes; i.e. diet, monitoring blood glucose, visit a doctor etc. It is helpful to have some awareness of FITT/FIRST in helping new gym clients.

ACE RESPONSE: Thank you for your feedback, we will look into incorporating these suggestions in a future update.

The text was mixed together for type 1 and type 2 making it difficult to keep the differences straight. Many of the suggestions were "do this" "but watch out for this". Which tells me its all a crap shoot. Changing the text to be more professional or more clear would be more helpful.

ACE RESPONSE: Thank you for the helpful feedback. We will look into updating this course.

Great info! The question related to getting medical information from the physician refers to page 168 in the PDF, however the pages only go from 138 - 157.

FROM ACE: Thank you for your feedback. This was a typo and the reference page has been corrected to page 142.

Very informative for developing effective program with Type 1 and 2 diabetic clients. I look forward to using this information, and wish more case studies were included to provide more real-life examples of what was taught.
