  • The components of gait and balance are fundamental to physical function and personal mobility. If you work with older clients, their gait and balance may be affected by a variety of age- and disease-related variables. This course, based on a chapter from ACE's Clinical Exercise Specialist Manual, will help you work more effectively with clients who have gait and balance challenges. Learn how to assess functional gait and balance and develop an appropriate balance progression as part of the workout.

    Course Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

    • Understand the characteristics of gait and the factors that can disrupt normal gait and balance, particularly in aging clients
    • Identify the components of balance and how each contributes to stability.
    • Describe functional tests to evaluate static and dynamic balance.
    • Discuss strategies for improving a client’s balance and developing appropriate exercise progressions

I suggest allowing individuals to see questions that were missed or at a minimum identify the topic area that needs improvement. The course content is very relevant and thorough.

I think this was too difficult. I read the article however I could not answer the questions as they did not apply to article content.

ACE RESPONSE: Thank you for your feedback. An ACE representative will be in contact with you via email to address your specific concerns.

Been a while since I had to read material at this level. Thanks for the refresher. That said, not all fitness professionals have a background in Exercise Science or other technical fields. It would be easier for those individuals to understand the material if a less technical writing style was used. Also would have appreciated feed back on the two questions I missed so I could have gone back and read those areas again to better understand my mistakes and the material. Thanks again! If you are working with mature cleints; this article is a must. Great references and tools to utilize for a "best practice" approach in exercise prescription.

It is best if we can review the rationale of the final exam. I dont even know what went wrong why I only got 8 when I thought I answered all the questions right. I am exiting the course with a cloudy thought =(

Gait and Balance issues (as well as the fear of falling) are very real concerns with older clients. The content of the course is very useful in understanding Gait and Balance issues and offers various helpful strategies for improvement including assessment, training, and progression. I did find some of the quiz questions to be confusing and poorly written, and when I pressed "skip", I expected to be able to go back and answer the question later but couldn't - which cost me the 100% score I was shooting for. :( That being said, I do feel much better equipped to support my older clients in this area. Thank you!

There was a lot of good information in the chapter and it was well written. However, some of the test questions were confusing and not well written.
