  • P90x™, Crossfit™, Metcon™ – As a Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor, you know the names, but what are they all about? Metabolic conditioning is hot and while many of us are familiar with it, we may not fully understand the physiological process behind this training philosophy to be able to maximize the benefits. Join ACE Exercise Physiologist, Fabio Comana, for this recorded webinar originally broadcast on March 21, 2011 and discover how to unlock the secrets to metabolic training programs. Learn how the body adapts to these stressors, identify key neuro-endocrine responses that can accelerate results, and learn how to progress your clients to metabolic training appropriately while avoiding injury, attrition and failure.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

    • Define the physiological benefits to metabolic conditioning.
    • Explain the key neuro-endocrine adaptations to this form of training.
    • Identify safe and effective progressions for metabolic conditioning.
    • Design and implement effective cardio and resistance-based metabolic programs.

While I was really intrigued by the subject the webinar was extremely difficult to follow. The voice was monotone and I struggled to finish. A lot of information for only .2 CEC credits and two hours of study time.

Although I recommend this course, I also recommend a large cup of stimulant containing beverage to go with it. The material is useful , although biased against CrossFit and Insanity. The program consists of a bunch of slides that change every 10 minutes or so while someone talks away in the background. Occasionally a little red arrow will appear next to a bullet point but that is the full extent of the excitement. I found I needed to go back every 5-10 minutes to catch up after zoning out. Fortunately the navigation bar operates smoothly. Again good material, very poor delivery.

ACE RESPONSE: Thank you for your feedback. We will look into updating this course.

Very interesting and I learned a lot about the hormonal responses to high-intensity exercise, as well as how to influence metabolism.

I liked the organization of the slides and the ability to replay the audio repeatedly. I struggle to understand the science and I find that the repetition helps me to learn.I'd like to see one more chapter called "Practical Application," so that I could see concrete examples of the principles explained in the course.

This is an excellent course explaining the science behind metabolic conditioning and training programs. Compared to CrossFit's line of thinking and training, there is nothing new here. Fabio is adamant about safety and the risk of injury and burnout in the Beach Body series workouts and CrossFit. I cannot speak for the Beach Body series, but as a CrossFit trainer I can attest to the benefits of CrossFit programming and science (much of the same science depicted here), as well as the safety. The most significant difference between the Beach Body series and CrossFit, and that Fabio fails to give appropriate mention, is SCALABILITY. He talks about the variables of intensity, volume, and power. A good CrossFit trainer will gradually increase those variables as his/her client progresses. Regardless of certification or whether you call it CrossFit, HIT, HIIT, metabolic conditioning, or whatever, this "style" of programming (when properly introduced) creates a fun and challenging training regimen that keeps clients adhering to your program and provides them with solid results. Just my 2 cents.  FROM ACE: Mark thanks for your feedback. We always welcome any feedback and it’s great to hear that you enjoyed the course so much.
