About

Monica M. Okolo is a Missouri City native who graduated at the top of her class at Willowridge High while captaining and playing varsity volleyball, basketball, track & field, and softball. Her senior year of high school she received a full academic scholarship into Texas Southern University’s Frederick Douglass Honor’s Program for her freshman year of college. Monica went on to also received a full basketball scholarship on the women’s team at Texas Southern University, where she played for the next 4 years. Monica graduated from Texas Southern with a bachelor of Business Administration in 2006 and passed up the opportunity to play professional basketball in the WNBA to start a family and get her Master's Degree in Public Administration in 2010. She went on to become the Protege to Mr. Stephen L. Williams, (The Director of the Health & Human Services Department in Houston) in 2010 within the National Forum for Black Public Administrator's (NFBPA) Mentor Program. The experience further fueled her passion to delve into the impact that access to community resources can have on youth health and educational outcomes. Her personal and deeply rooted passion to positively impact youth and instill within them their individual greatness is a driving force behind the founding of STEPS 2 SWEAT, Family Advancement, Inc. Monica's love for basketball is apparent as she is a 2nd year basketball player and Team Captain for the Houston Inferno BBA team. Ms. Okolo is also currently serving as a 2nd year basketball coach to both the girl's and boy's team of a local Catholic School. Monica hopes to use her new certification as a Personal Trainer as a tool to increase programming outcomes and curriculum for her non-profit which is focused on improving the obesity epidemic in low-income and minority communities.
