Sample Question

You are working with a male client who has a body composition that is 25% body fat. What would be the MOST effective program to improve his body composition?

A. Aerobic exercise and resistance training
B. Nutritional analysis and diet plan
C. Flexibility training and agility drills
D. Pilates and a high protein diet

Answer

A - Research has shown that exercise programs which include both aerobic exercise and resistance training are most effective in improving body composition. Dieting alone results in muscle loss and metabolic rate reduction, causing a decrease in lean body mass resulting in little or no change in body composition. Flexibility and agility training will improve range of motion and a person’s ability to change direction with speed and precision, but will not necessarily improve body composition. Pilates will aid in developing muscular balance and flexibility, but it alone is not effective in creating large improvements in body composition. A high protein diet may result in weight reduction in the short term due to water loss, but in the long term can lead to heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis, if a person is consuming more protein than needed.
