Do Declining Bagel Sales Signal End of Low-Fat Craze?
It wasn't so long ago that bagel shops were cropping up all over the place, seemingly able to keep pace with that most ubiquitous of chains, Starbucks.
But it appears the tide has turned against the healthy, low-fat bagel (as it did against its once-popular predecessor, the yogurt shop, which got the heave-ho from gourmet ice cream shops).
Noah/Einstein Bagel Corp. has been forced to close many of its 539 stores in an effort to avoid bankruptcy. As news spreads that low fat doesn't necessarily translate to a tighter bottom line, many Americans are opting instead to wait in long lines for Krispy Kremes.
