National Physique Committee (NPC) competitor

By Jenny Tremblay

My Name is Jenny "JT" Tremblay. I am thrilled with this opportunity to share my story as a National Physique Committee (NPC) competitor in both Bodybuilding and Women's Figure.

Since 2003 I have actively participated in NPC Amateur Competitions, many of which have included State of Florida NPC sanctioned events. Each year I have noticed improvement in the on- and off-season as I refine my skills, train harder, stay focused on my goals, and prepare for each individual competition prior to stepping on stage.

In 2004, I sustained a personal loss with the passing of my beloved father, Gerald Tremblay. I began to wonder if I would compete again and continue on in my fitness endeavors. Several months later, I was blessed with the opportunity to meet my friend, Richard, who completely lifted my spirits, made me believe in myself again and helped me with both my emotional healing and physical-fitness progression.

My weight had climbed to almost 140 lbs, which was 30 lbs from where I needed to be if I wanted to compete in Women's Figure competitions. I was motivated to become strong again and elected to dedicate my new competitions to my father's memory. I trained very hard that year and was able to achieve my fitness goals. I earned 10 titles in the Florida NPC Sanction, placing in five different events. Throughout the regimented training and the hard work my dad was with me in spirit. I was so happy when I stepped on that stage at 110 lbs.

I continually learn from my fellow NPC Amateur competitors and trainers, as well as through observations of skilled IFBB Pro competitors in their respective Bodybuilding and Figure competitions. Like most others in this sport I have changed my strategies, and incorporated other methods that work for me as I push to be the best I can be, striving to reach my standard of personal excellence. I do my best to improve as a "baby boomer" competitor at 40 years old. And I have earned a total of 15 titles and placements in NPC competitions at various state levels. I am pleased with my accomplishments and exposure, which include appearing in an article in Southern Muscle Plus magazine as well as other media sources.

I do my best to keep my career as an engineer separate from all that comes along with competing as an amateur in Women's Bodybuilding and Women's Figure. I originally developed an appetite for Bodybuilding in 2001. It was at that time I read the book Body for Life by Bill Phillips. After following his 12-week program and participating in his challenge, I noticed a huge difference in the way I looked and felt. My self confidence increased drastically. After accomplishing this challenge I knew I could take my training to the next level.

In addition, I always try to demonstrate good sportsmanship and professionalism in all of my competitions. And I am not the only one; the popularity of Women's Bodybuilding has grown over the past three years, which has allowed me to meet many wonderful and inspiring individuals from whom I have learned a lot about strength and character.

This year I have been working with a new trainer, Debbie Callahan of DEBS GYM, who is very skilled, patient, understanding, supportive and keeps me focused on my training and fitness goals. And, recently, I competed in an NPC-sanctioned Women's Figure competition in Florida where I earned first place in the "Over 30" master's category. Since 2005 one of my goals has been to transition from competing in only Women's Bodybuilding to competing in Women's Figure as well. This switch involves a different style of training, stage presence and mental preparation, so placing in this competition was very rewarding. Originally from Canada, I relocated to the U.S. in 1992 to continue on with my career path in the field of engineering. I was proud to become an American citizen in 2004.

Gaining and maintaining the support of family, friends and loved ones plays a huge role for bodybuilders. Bodybuilding requires a great deal of personal dedication and commitment, regardless of gender, age, or class of competition. I encourage anyone to follow his/her dreams, regardless of what they are.

I hope my story has been inspirational in some way; and remember; stay fit and healthy! Thank you.
