American Council on Exercise - FAQs

Accreditation

Q. What is the difference between education, certification (credentialing) and continuing education?
A.
Education:
  • Teaches foundational knowledge and skills and measures the cognitive retention of the student.
  • Many fields require that education be completed in the form of a degree as a pre-requisite for the professional credential.
Certification (Credentialing):
  • Measures, in a standardized and unbiased manner, the ability of the candidate to apply the knowledge and skills in the role of a professional.
  • Passing a certification establishes that the individual is minimally competent to work unsupervised in a given field or profession.
  • Certification does not mean that an individual knows everything required to be considered an expert in a given field.
Continuing Education:
  • Keeps the professional current by updating their knowledge base and teaching them new skills.
  • Frequently is associated with the development of a specialty.
  • May also be based on a specific modality or tool.
  • Assumes that the individual participating possesses all of the foundational knowledge required of the minimally competent professional.
  • Generally does not meet the threshold for credible certification for exam content, structure and administration.

Q. Are all certifications really certifications?
A. In the fitness industry the term certification has been incorrectly applied to many continuing education courses based on the definition of certification. Most courses provide either foundational education or continuing education content.

Q. If a course isn't really a certification, why should a professional take it?
A. Just because a course is a foundational education or continuing education course does not make it less valuable to the fitness professional than a certification, merely that a certificate of completion or specialty certificate would be a more appropriate designation.

Q. Why accreditation?
A. Accreditation of certification organizations is a topic of much discussion in the fitness industry which has its roots in the recommendation from the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) Board of Directors to its membership on qualifications for personal trainers.

The IHRSA Board's Resolution:
"Whereas, given the increasing importance personal training plays in health, fitness and sports clubs, IHRSA recommends that, as of January 1, 2006, member clubs hire personal trainers who hold at least one current certification from a certifying organization/agency that has obtained third-party accreditation of its certification procedures and protocols from an independent, experienced, and nationally recognized accrediting body.

Furthermore, given the twenty-six year history of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA) in establishing quality standards for certifying agencies, IHRSA has identified the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accreditation body of NOCA, as being an acceptable accrediting organization. Other equivalent accrediting organizations may be recognized as well, as they come to IHRSA's attention."

Q. What does the NCCA look for when accrediting certification organizations?
A. The NCCA evaluates the processes and systems used by an organization to identify professional role and scope of practice, develop exam content, and provide proper exam administration and scoring to ensure the following:
  • That the examination process is fair and unbiased
  • That the examination accurately measures the minimal competence of the candidate for the profession
  • That the public is protected from unqualified or ineffective practitioners
  • That the organization has the means to support its professionals

Q. Are there other accrediting organizations that are "equivalent" to NCCA?
A. The only other organization for possible consideration as a credible accreditation organization for certifying agencies is ANSI based on their long history of setting well-recognized and widely accepted industrial and workplace safety and quality standards.

Information on Accreditation of Certification Programs: Certification is usually a voluntary process instituted by a nongovernmental agency in which individuals are recognized for acquired knowledge and skill. It requires assessment, including testing, and an evaluation of education and/or experience. In some instances, individuals who seek certification may already hold a license. Also, certification may be non-voluntary for some professions (i.e., required by the profession) and may be considered the equivalent of a license to practice (e.g., EMTs, nurses, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, etc).

Licensure refers to a mandatory governmental requirement that restricts the practice in a particular profession. It also requires assessment, including testing, and an evaluation of education and/or experience. Licensure implies both practice protection and title protection, in that only individuals who hold a license are permitted to practice and to use a particular title.

NCCA is an independent nongovernmental agency that accredits professional certifications in a variety of professions. NCCA reviews the certification organization's procedures, protocols and operations and determines if the certification properly discriminates between those who are qualified and those who are not qualified to be awarded the respective credential. The following is a sample of the 21 standards that a certification organization must comply with to be awarded NCCA accreditation:

  • Conduct certification activities in a manner that upholds standards for competent practice in a profession, occupation, role, or skill.
  • Include individuals from the certified population on the certification board or governing committee of the certification program.
  • Establish, publish, apply, and periodically review key certification policies and procedures concerning existing and prospective certificants.
  • Employ assessment instruments that are derived from the job/practice analysis and that are consistent with generally accepted psychometric principles.
  • Develop and adhere to appropriate, standardized, and secure procedures for the development and administration of the assessment instruments.
  • Set the cut score consistent with the purpose of the credential and the established standard of competence for the profession, occupation, role, or skill.
  • Award certification only after the knowledge and/or skill of individual applicants have been evaluated and determined to be acceptable.
  • Establish and apply policies and procedures for secure retention of assessment results and scores of all candidates.
  • Demonstrate that its recertification requirements measure or enhance the continued competence of certificants.
* Note that the NCCA accredits certification programs and NOT education programs. Therefore, to avoid conflicts of interest between certification and education functions, the NCCA requires that the certification agency must NOT also be responsible for accreditation of educational or training programs or courses of study leading to the certification (see www.noca.org).

Q. What will the adoption of the NCCA accreditation standard mean to me as a fitness professional?
A.
  • Accreditation of a credentialing organization by the NCCA is the standard for a large majority of well-respected allied health care professionals and others professions (e.g., nursing, nutrition, athletic training, etc.).
  • By earning an NCCA-accredited certification, fitness professionals demonstrate that they are qualified to take a legitimate place on the healthcare continuum based on what is usual and customary for healthcare and other professionals which is critical for developing an appropriate level of professional recognition which should also positively impact compensation levels for fitness professionals.
  • For education providers in the fitness industry it means selecting the aspect (education, credentialing or continuing education) that best fits the organizational and business structure of their organization. It does not mean that there are not opportunities for growth or that they do not provide an essential and valuable service to the fitness industry.
Certification is the "hardware" of the fitness business, education is the "software."

Q. Does NCCA Accreditation mean ACE-certified Professionals have to re-sit for the ACE Exam?
A. The issue of accreditation for certification organizations by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) is one that has generated a significant amount of coverage and discussion within the fitness industry press, and among education providers and the fitness professionals that we collectively serve. The concept of "grandfathering" of an organization's fitness professionals following accreditation has become one of the key issues among those discussions.

Because the American Council on Exercise has always utilized an appropriate and NCCA-recognized process to develop and administer its certification examinations, all ACE professionals regardless of when they earned their ACE certification (even if it was earned prior to our NCCA accreditation date of August 2003) are not required to re-sit for certification.

Q. Do we need a national board exam for fitness professionals?
A. The current proposal for a national board exam is based on the false assumption that there are no credible national standards for fitness certification today and that a national board exam is the precursor to licensure for fitness professionals. In fact, NCCA accreditation is the recognized standard for professional credentialing and licensing exam organization in the allied healthcare and other skilled professional fields. Any new credentialing organization would still need to earn NCCA accreditation which would take a minimum of two years following the introduction of their testing instrument (exam).

Q. Is licensure coming to the fitness industry?
A. The call for licensure is typically driven by two factors:
  1. Failure of an industry to provide for significant self-regulation.
  2. A significant risk to public health that requires government intervention. The determination that licensure is required is made through a process called a "sunrise review" that determines the qualifications, skills and knowledge required to work in the proposed licensed profession, and if there are any existing recognized certification standards in the field (usually an NCCA-accredited organization or organizations). Currently, only Louisiana (with its licensure for Clinical Exercise Physiologists) has legislation regarding licensure and the fitness industry.

Q. Would licensure be beneficial for fitness professionals?
A. Licensure does not necessarily ensure that the fitness professional will see an increase in compensation or professional recognition. The suggestion that a national board and/or licensure is the key to creating relationships with the medical community and lead to possible insurance reimbursement for fitness professionals is greatly exaggerated. In fact, there may be unintended consequences associated with pro-actively pursuing licensure. Some of the unintended consequences of pursuing licensure could include:
  • A limitation of the scope of practice via legislation by well-meaning legislators influenced by lobbyists from various interested parties.
  • Additional and unnecessary expenses associated with licensure.
  • Alerting the public and the government to a purported "risk" of working with qualified fitness professionals that does not exist.

    Study Materials

    ^ Top of Page

    Q. What materials do I need?
    A. ACE has created a series of preparation materials that cater to individual's learning style. Each product is design to help improve the retention of the information that is provided in the accompany manual. Candidates should ask themselves. ACE strongly recommends that candidates purchase at least the manual to prepare for their respective certification exam.

    Q. How do I get started?
    A. Your first step should be to order your study materials. Once you have received the materials you should create a realistic study plan based upon potential exam dates and individual needs.

    Q. What is the purpose of the ACE manual?
    A. The ACE manual is intended to serve primarily as a resource for fitness professionals. Because the manual is comprehensive in nature, it is also a valuable tool for those studying for the ACE exam.

    Q. How do I use the manual?
    A. The ACE manual for each certification is designed as the most comprehensive guide to help prepare you for the ACE exam from a theoretical standpoint. It will address the majority of exam questions, but not necessarily every one. If you find that the manual does not cover a particular objective in the detail you'd like, ACE recommends that you review the suggested readings section at the end of each chapter to help you identify supplemental study materials.

    Q. How much do ACE study materials cost?
    A. The cost on the materials will depend on your preference. For more information on study material packages visit the ACE store.

    Q. What if I need additional study assistance?
    A. For personal trainers, ACE highly recommends signing up for the free Study Coach Program to guide you through your studies. Additionally, consider the Personal Trainer Exam Review Course, available as a live workshop across the U.S. as well as a convenient at-home format.

    Q. What test-taking strategies do you recommend when taking the ACE exams?
    A. Listed below are strategies for taking the ACE certification exams as well as other standardized multiple-choice exams:
    • Pace yourself and make efficient use of your time. You should be halfway through the exam (or slightly more) when half of your time is up.
    • Answer the easy questions first. More difficult questions can always be answered later.
    • Read each question carefully and avoid skimming or speed-reading. Be sure you understand what the question is asking. Underline key or bold face phrases: BEST, MOST, LEAST, EXCEPT, etc.
    • Try to anticipate what the answer is but still read all response options carefully before finalizing an answer. Remember that there is only one correct answer, though, and two response options may appear to be similar without careful reading.
    • Don't over-analyze or read into the question. Each question is written as clearly as possible and should be interpreted as it appears. There is no hidden meaning or attempt to trick you.
    • Eliminate the least plausible response options. Eliminating one or two response options may increase your chances of selecting the correct answer with an educated guess.
    • Take care in marking your answer sheet. Be sure that the question you are working on in your exam booklet corresponds to the mark you are making on your answer sheet.
    • Answer every question. Remember, there is no penalty for guessing.
    • Although first impressions are best, change your answer if you feel strongly about it.
    • Response options on the ACE exams are randomized. If you know absolutely nothing about a question, it is best to make an educated guess and move on.

    Preparing for the Exam

    ^ Top of Page

    Q. How much time should I allow to prepare for the exam?
    A. It depends on your education and experience. If you have a background in exercise science and have been working in the field for at least six months, you may only require a few weeks of review. However, if you are just entering the profession, you may require four to six months to study and obtain hands-on experience.

    Q. What factors will influence how I perform on the exam?
    A. Your performance will be influenced by your preparation, education, knowledge and experience, as well as your ability to take a multiple choice exam. Keep in mind that while specific and careful preparation will significantly increase the probability that you will perform well, it does not guarantee a passing score.

    Q. What is the Exam Content Outline section in the back of each manual?
    A. The Exam Content Outline is essentially a blueprint for the exam. All exam questions are based on this outline which may be found in the appendix in the ACE manual. Being familiar with the content of the exam can also help alleviate test anxiety since you'll know exactly what to expect.

    Q. How do I use the Exam Content Outline section in the back of the manual to prepare for the exam?
    A. ACE recommends that you review each objective and rate your own knowledge and skills to determine where further study and hands-on experience are needed:
    • Good: you have a solid understanding and/or command of skills and no additional review is needed
    • Fair: you have a partial understanding and/or command of skills and some additional review is needed
    • Poor: You have a limited or no understanding and/or command of skills and detailed review is needed

    Q. What is the written simulation?
    A. Purpose of the Exam
    • The Written Simulation Exam applies to the Personal Trainer Certification only.
    • The purpose of the ACE Written Simulation Exam is to test the decision-making ability of the candidate.
    • The problems in the exam are intended to simulate, as closely as possible, the types of situations that an actual certified personal trainer may encounter in a professional setting.

    Exam Format
    Candidates will receive two booklets:
    1. Problem Booklet
      • The problem booklet contains two problems.
      • Each problem is divided into sections.
      • Each section begins with an introduction/scenario that describes a set of circumstances.
      • Each section also contains a list of actions/decisions from which the candidate chooses those that he/she deems appropriate given the circumstances at that time.
    2. Answer Booklet
      • The answer booklet is printed on latent image paper. The booklet appears to be a set of blank pages.
      • The candidate indicates their choice of actions/decisions (based on the problem) in the answer booklet. This is done by using a special latent image pen to highlight their choice. When a selection is made, a printed response/consequence to the action is revealed.
      • An entire response has been exposed when a double asterisk (**) appears. Once a response has been uncovered, it cannot be erased or undone.
    Exam Tools
    • In the problem booklet, the candidate can use a pencil to help mark or order responses prior to making selections in the answer booklet.
    • The candidate will receive a special latent image pen to use on the answer booklet.
    Section Format
    • Each section in a problem begins with a set of instructions that must be followed carefully.
    • In each section, the choices appear in a random order. All of the choices should be considered before making any selection.
    • The information given in a section is to be used to make decisions for the sections that follow.
    • The candidate must be able to identify pertinent information. Many actions/decisions in real-life situations do not cause immediate observable results. In a similar manner, a significant number of selections (whether correct or incorrect) will reveal information that is not useful.
    • Candidates have one hour to complete the written simulation examination.

    Q. Does ACE have any type of exam preparation course I can attend?
    A. The ACE Personal Trainer Exam Review Course is designed to cover the critical competencies from the exam content outline located in your Personal Trainer manual. This course is best suited for individuals with some prior fitness knowledge, and is not meant as a substitute for preparation. Rather, the course is an instructional aide to facilitate the learning process. The ACE Personal Trainer Exam Review Course is a vital study tool for individuals who learn best in a classroom setting. It is a great opportunity to interact with an instructor and other ACE exam candidates to clarify any areas of confusion or concern. Candidates who take an exam preparation course have a higher first-time pass rate compared to candidates studying on their own. All ACE Exam Preparation Tutors are degreed professionals, hold an ACE certification and have numerous years of teaching experience. The ACE Personal Trainer Exam Review live workshop is held throughout the U.S. Additionally, an online version is available for convenient, at-home study.

    Q. What industry guidelines and standards should I be familiar with?
    A. As outlined in the ACE manual, you should be familiar with the latest guidelines and standards as they relate to exercise from organizations such as: American College of Sports Medicine, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Dietetic Association, American Heart Association, National Institutes of Health, etc.

    Q. How is the exam developed?
    A. The following outlines the exam-development process that adheres to accepted certification practices. This ensures that certified professionals meet minimum standards of knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and effective fitness instruction.
    1. Job Analysis/Role Delineation: A group of industry experts analyzes the specific job requirements in order to develop an outline of the tasks, knowledge and skills required to perform the job effectively (e.g. group fitness instruction, personal training, etc.).
    2. Validation Study: A research survey is conducted to determine the validity of the job analysis. The survey is sent to a large, national random sample of fitness professionals for validation.
    3. Item Writing: A national and representative panel of industry experts develops exam questions that are tied to exam specifications and referenced to acceptable texts or documents.
    4. Exam Construction: The questions are reviewed, selected and approved by an exam committee. The constructed exam is then forwarded to an independent testing service for final editing.
    5. Cut Score Determination: The passing score is determined as a standard for public protection. Each question is rated by a group of industry experts using criterion-referenced procedures. The experts estimate the percentage of minimally competent professionals that will answer each question correctly. The passing score is then calculated and based on the overall degree of difficulty.
    6. Continual Exam Evaluation: Following an exam administration, there is a continual evaluation and analysis of each question to help ensure validity. If a question is determined to be flawed, it is reworked or replaced. A new exam-development process begins every five years. ACE exams are developed using the six-point exam development process and are guided by standards accepted by the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education.

    Q. How is the exam structured?
    A. Each ACE exam consists of several domains, and each domain makes up a certain percentage of questions. The exam content outline can be found in the back of each manual.

For example, the domains for the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Certification Exam are as follows:
    1. Exercise Science
    2. Exercise Programming
    3. Instructional Technique
    4. Professional Responsibility

    Q. How many questions are on the exam, and how long will I have to answer them?
    A. There are 150 questions on each certification exam, and you have three hours to complete the exam. The personal trainer exam consists of 2 written simulation questions.

    Q. What is a Task Statement in the Exam Content Outline section in the back of each manual?
    A. A Task Statement details the job-related functions under each domain. For example, under the Exercise Science domain of the Group Fitness Certification Exam, Task 1 is as follows:
    • Domain I: Exercise Science
    • Task 1: To demonstrate knowledge of basic cardiorespiratory physiology by applying correct cardiorespiratory physiological principles in order to develop and instruct safe and effective exercise.

    Q. What are the Knowledge and Skill statements in the Exam Content Outline section in the back of each manual?
    A. The Knowledge and Skill statements are designed to help you review the scope of materials covered in each domain of the exam. Each exam domain is broken up into Knowledge statements to help you cover the information you should have acquired, and Skill statements that cover how that information is applied in a practical manner.

Example: Establish rapport through effective communication to obtain accurate and comprehensive information.
    • Knowledge of: Communication techniques (e.g., active listening, appropriate eye contact, reflecting, other attending behaviors)
    • Skill in: Applying interview and communication techniques

    Q. What kind of questions can I expect on the exam?
    A. You can expect three types of questions: knowledge, application and analysis. Keep in mind that each question has one correct or clearly best answer.

    Q. What is a knowledge question?
    A. A knowledge question assesses facts, terminology and comprehension of important principles. Candidates are asked to demonstrate their ability to remember information. A relatively small number of knowledge questions are presented on the ACE exams since they assess the lowest cognition level. For example:

What muscle extends the elbow joint?
    1. Triceps brachii
    2. Triceps surae
    3. Rectus femoris
    4. Peroneus longus

    Q. What is an application question?
    A. An application question assesses your ability to recognize the proper use of factual information and principles in solving problems you can expect on the job. For example:

The following question refers to the information below: Age: 27 Height: 5'4" Weight: 125 lbs. Lean body mass: 90 lbs. Triceps measurement: 16 mm Suprailium measurement: 25 mm Thigh: 32 mm. What is Sarah's body fat percentage?
    1. 23 percent
    2. 28 percent
    3. 33 percent
    4. 38 percent

    Q. What is an analysis question?
    A. An analysis question assesses your ability to examine information and understand the relationship between its components - that is, how the parts work together to make a whole. Thus, if you analyze the facts correctly, you'll be able to identify the problem and find the right answer:

The food label on a 12-ounce bag of candy provides the following information: Serving size: 6 pieces (40g). Servings per container: 8. Amount per serving: Calories: 160. Calories from fat: 27g. Fat: 3g (4%). Saturated fat: 0.5g (3%). Sugars: 30g (11%). Protein: less than 1g. What is the total amount and percentage of calories that come from fat in the entire bag?
    1. 27 calories, 4 percent
    2. 216 calories, 17 percent
    3. 27 calories, 17 percent
    4. 252 calories, 20 percent

    Q. What happens if I don't have an admission ticket?
    A. You must contact ACE if you:
    1. Lose or misplace your admission ticket
    2. Do not receive your admission ticket one week prior to the exam date
If you fail to notify ACE or do not take the exam you registered for, you must reschedule your exam to a future date according to the policies immediately below.

    Q. Am I permitted to bring a calculator to the exam?
    A. No, we do not allow candidates to use calculators during the exam. It's difficult for the proctors to distinguish between non-programmable and programmable calculators and this poses a potential security risk. Candidates could gain an unfair advantage by programming specific fitness information that could be used to help answer questions and possibly copy sensitive exam information. Keep in mind there are only about a dozen or so questions that involve basic math.

    Q. What do I need to bring to the exam?
    A.
    1. Your admission ticket

    Q. Scoring, Passing Score and Equating Process.
    A. ACE scores your exam according to procedures accepted by the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association and the National Council on Measurement in Education. Your score is derived from the number of questions you answer correctly and reported as a scaled score from 200-800. Your score includes statistical adjustments to equalize the difficulty of passing all versions of the exams. The minimum passing score for all ACE exams is 500.

The Personal Trainer examination is comprised of two portions:
    • A two-problem written simulation that contributes 25% towards your final score
    • A 150 multiple-choice examination that contributes 75% towards your final score
Within the written simulation, scoring is divided into 5 possible categories: those choices that are clearly indicated", "indicated", "neutral", "contraindicated" or "clearly contraindicated" The more indicated the score, the higher the positive points you score for marking that choice and vice versa (negative points for marking contraindicated scores). Neutral answers will not benefit nor harm you, hence are not allocated any point value. The scoring is cumulative, implying that the total of all your positive and negative scores are added together to achieve a final score for each simulation problem and then scaled for degree of difficulty. The two scaled simulation scores collectively contribute 25% towards your final score.

    Q. Can I get my exam rescored?
    A. If you do not pass the exam and feel there was an error in your score, you may request to have your answer sheet re-scored by hand to ensure that no error(s) occurred during computer scoring. However, please be aware that the results of manual re-scoring rarely, if ever, differs from that obtained through the automated process.

    Your request:
    1. Must be in writing to CASTLE (address at bottom of this page)
    2. Must be made within six months of your exam date
    3. Must be accompanied by a $30.00 fee payable to CASTLE. CASTLE will inform you of your re-scored results within two to four weeks. CASTLE will maintain score records indefinitely for the duration of your certification

    Q. Can I cancel my scores?
    A. Candidates may cancel their scores by writing to CASTLE (address at the bottom of this page) no more than seven days after the exam. Also, candidates involved in misconduct at the exam center risk having their scores canceled. No refunds are given for exam scores that have been canceled due to misconduct.

    Q. Can I be disqualified?
    A. You may be disqualified from taking or continuing in the examination process, or from receiving exam results, if ACE and/or CASTLE (the organization administering the exams on behalf of ACE) have determined through either examiner observation or statistical analysis that you were engaged in collaborative, disruptive or other unacceptable behavior before, during or following the administration of the ACE exam.

    Q. What is the refund policy for the exam?
    A. If you decide for any reason you cannot or do not wish to take the exam after registering, you may request a 50% refund of your exam fee upon request in lieu of rescheduling. To apply for a refund:
    1. Submit a written request to ACE
    2. Postmark or electronically date-stamp your request no later than 30 days prior to your scheduled exam date
No refunds will be given after the allotted 30 days and your only alternative will be to reschedule and pay rescheduling fee.
International exam candidates are not eligible for refunds.
Exceptions to the refund deadline will be considered on a case-by-case basis for documented cases of serious illness, bereavement or other emergencies. In these instances, candidates must electronically date-stamp or postmark their refund request no later than 60 days after the exam date and provide any and all supporting documentation.
No refunds will be given for rescheduled exams. You can expect to receive your refund or notice of denial within six weeks of the receipt of your request.

    Retake Policy
You are eligible for the retake exam fee for a period of one year after you have taken your first exam. After this one-year period, you must submit the first-time candidate exam fee.

    Transfer Site Fee
If you would like to take the exam at a different site other than where you initially registered, you may complete your request by:
    1. Faxing or mailing in your request before the 30-day deadline, with the Exam Site Transfer box checked on the exam registration form, along with payment for $25 made payable to ACE.
    2. Sitting for the exam as a stand-by candidate at the new location and paying the $25 Transfer Site Fee. Stand-bys are not guaranteed a seat and will be registered in order of arrival as space and resources permit.

    Q. What if I need special accommodations?

For renewals between two and six months after your expiration date, the fee is $109. After six months you may be required to take the certification exam again (Note: Fees subject to change without notice. Renewals submitted after the deadline may be subject to additional fees). When you renew late, you are using time into your next certification period. Your expiration date never changes.

    Q. I sent my renewal in, why haven't I received my updated card and certificate yet?
    A. Due to the high volume of certification renewals processed, please allow four to six weeks for your renewal to be processed before you call to check on it.

    Continuing Education Credits (CECs)

    ^ Top of Page

    Q. Does CPR, AED or First Aid re-certification count towards my CECs, and if so, how many?
    A. Yes, you will earn 0.1 CEC for each re-certification

    Q. How are CECs calculated?
    A. A course is assigned CECs (continuing education credit) based on the amount of time that is spent in the educational portion of a course, for each hour of structured learning ACE assigns 0.1 CEC. Credit is not received for activity courses, master classes, time taking exams or breaks, or non-related courses that prepare participants for distinctly different professions.

Courses must be relevant to your ACE certification. University extension classes do not automatically qualify for CECs, however you may petition for approval. Semester = 1.0 per unit. Quarter = 0.8 per unit. A letter grade of "C" or higher is required from accredited colleges/universities. A grade report or transcript (does not need to be an official transcript sent from the school - can be a copy issued to student) is needed to apply for CECs.

    Q. If I hold more than one ACE certification, do I need to earn 2.0 CECs for each certification?
    A. ACE recognizes the same courses for all of its certifications as long as the CECs are taken within the appropriate renewal period. For more information on CECs please contact Professional Services at 1-888-825-3636.

    Q. If I have three ACE certifications, do I have to take CECs for each certification or do the CEC courses apply to all three certifications?
    A. If you take your 2.0 CECs within the time frame that all three certifications are current, you may apply the same set of CECs towards all three certifications. For example:
Your Personal Trainer certification is valid from 2/00 - 2/02
Your Group Fitness Instructor Certification is valid from 8/99 - 8/01
Your Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant Certification is valid from 5/99 - 5/01
CECs taken from 2/00 - 5/01 would apply for all three of your certifications.
Keep in mind, however, that although you may use your CECs towards all three of your certifications, they are still considered individual certifications, and require individual renewal fees.

    Q. How do I get credit for courses that are not pre-approved by ACE?
    A. You may petition ACE to receive CECs for non-approved courses that contribute to your fitness and teaching skills. To qualify, courses must meet rigorous ACE continuing education standards. Download petition form.

    Q. Can I get CECs for a workout session, activity course, or for taking another organization's exam?
    A. No, these activities do not meet ACE continuing education criteria. CECs are only available for ACE professionals that elect to take an additional ACE certification exam.

    Q. If I earn more than 2.0 CECs during a certification period, can I apply the extra credits to my next certification period?
    A. No, credits apply only to your current certification period. Extra credits may not be applied to your next certification period.

    Q. How many CECs do I need for my continuing education requirements?
    A. You must complete a total of 2.0 (20 hours) of CECs every two years to renew your certification.

If you hold multiple ACE certifications, each will be subject to the above guidelines, dependent upon their individual expiration dates.

    Q. What do I do with my CECs once I have completed a course?
    A. You can enter your CEC course numbers into your account by logging into the ACE Prosite. If you do not have access to a computer your can send when you are ready to renew.

    Q. What if the course I have taken is not ACE-approved?
    A. If a course is not formally ACE-approved, we do offer a petition option to get CEC credits. A petition form can be downloaded from the ACE Prosite in the forms section.

    Q. What should I do with the certificates of completion?
    A. Keep all certificates of completion and any other course documentation for at least four years. Continuing education costs may be tax deductible as a business expense. Please check with your tax consultant for details.

    Q. I want to market myself and use the ACE Logo. How can I market my credential and use the ACE logo?
    A.
      What you may do:
    1. ACE-certified professionals are encouraged to use the ACE-Certified Logo Mark. In conjunction with usage of the logo mark, you must properly identify your ACE certification, for example: ACE-certified Group Fitness Instructor, ACE-certified Personal Trainer, ACE-certified Clinical Exercise Specialist or ACE-certified Lifestyle & Weight Management Consultant.
    2. You may use the ACE-Certified Logo Mark on materials such as business cards, stationery or brochures that promote you personally using any ACE certification(s) you've earned. Misrepresentation of your ACE certification is a breech of the ACE Code of Ethics and subject to disciplinary action.
    3. The ACE-Certified Logo Mark is to be reproduced in the color version provided by ACE, or as a one-color version in black ink only. The only exception to this guideline is if the materials are being printed in one-color ink, other than black, in which case it is acceptable to reproduce the logo mark in that one color.
    4. Visit the ACE ProSite for a Logo Usage Guide and to download the logo image files.
      What you may not do:
    1. Do not use the ACE Corporate Logo Mark. The ACE Certification Logo Mark is to be used instead.
    2. Do not use the American Council on Exercise name or ACE-Certified Logo Mark with any other descriptive qualifier (for example, endorsed, approved, recommended, suggested or sanctioned by).
    3. Do not use the American Council on Exercise name or ACE-Certified Logo Mark on any promotional materials that promote your services as a trainer or instructor of other fitness professionals, such as continuing education, seminars or basic training, unless it is contained within your personal biographical material.
    4. Do not use the American Council on Exercise name or ACE-Certified Logo Mark in conjunction with any other product or merchandise such as videos, clothing, etc.
    5. Do not alter the ACE-Certified Logo Mark in any way.
    6. Do not use the letters A.C.E. or the word ACE after your name.
