ACE-certified Success Stories
ACE-certified Personal Trainer
As I was approaching 40, my life began to fall apart. I was suffering from acid reflux disease and diverticulosis, and a doctor told me that I drank too much and was in terrible physical condition.
On his advice I started a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet and reduced my alcohol intake. I also began exercising a couple of times a week in a gym. Even with those lifestyle changes, at age 44, I suffered a myocardial infarction and lost function in twenty-five percent of my left ventricle. I refused invasive surgery and drugs, and greatly accelerated my workout program. I began to do aerobic exercise for the first time since getting out of the Army at age twenty. My life became ideal as health improved and, within seven years, I had alleviated all symptoms of my damaged heart.
As I approached my 60th birthday, my health started to decline. After a physical examination and some testing, it was discovered that I had advanced prostate cancer. Once again, I researched my disease and decided to do a major shift in my diet. I became vegan and cut all coffee, alcohol, and processed foods. I now try to eat as much locally-grown produce as possible, and stick to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Within six weeks my cholesterol dropped from 228 to 146, and my PSA (prostate specific androgen, an indicator of the cancer spread) reduced by 25%. I began hormone and radiation therapy at the UCSF MT Zion radiation center. Rather than waste time in waiting rooms and commuting on the local Medical Van while undergoing treatment, my wife, Ann, and I began to study for the ACE Personal Trainer Certification Exam. We both passed and she has gone on to become an ACE-certified Lifestyle and Weight Management Coach. I hope to pass the LWMC exam as well.
Ann and I started a fitness consulting business doing personal training and lifestyle weight management. I have taken on clients who are being referred to me by local doctors and physical therapists for continued fitness training. The best part is that only one year after therapy, all indicators are that I have beaten the cancer.
I truly believe that all of life's wellness problems can be solved with routine exercise, a healthy diet, and a positive attitude. Each day I wake up and tell myself it's just another day in paradise. If you say it enough you will believe it. I retired from a career working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where I was involved in basic research projects. Working in research I found that if you define a problem, phrase the question correctly, you will answer the question with its asking. My question was "where do I find the most pleasure in life" and my answer was "in living healthy and fit."
