ACE-certified Success Stories
ACE-certified Group Fitness Instructor
Northwest Personal Training & Fitness Education
1st Runner-up, 2005 ACE Fitness Educator of the Year
I became ACE Certified in 1993. Early in my career when I decided I wanted to obtain international credibility, I knew that ACE was the organization that would be recognized around the world and jumpstart my career and it did just that.
I started in the fitness industry as a group fitness instructor, weight room supervisor and sales staff at GoodLife Fitness Clubs in Canada. I obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Human Kinetics and then a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of British Columbia, all while working in the fitness industry. Once I finished my academic career, people asked what I would do next and I happily answered, "I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing." I love working in the fitness industry and you know what they say, "If you love what you do, you never have to work another day in your life."
My fitness career is so diversified-business owner, personal trainer, fitness instructor, presenter, motivational speaker, and author. My husband and I own a 5,000 square foot personal training studio in Vancouver, Washington. We offer private, partner and group personal training, monthly outdoor adventures, educational seminars and corporate health programs. I spend a great deal of time on my computer writing health and fitness columns for PT on the NET, IDEA, CanFitPro and other fitness industry trade journals, magazines and newspapers all around the world. I have also authored 4 books: "Successful Trainer's Guide to Marketing" through IDEA, "Go For Fit - The Winning Way to Fat Loss", "Hiring & Training Master Trainers", and "Fit over Forty - The Winning Way to Lifetime Fitness." I have presented various workshops, courses and seminars over the past 12 years. I am an ACE Continuing Education Provider and have presented over 100 different types of programs and courses around the world to thousands of fitness professionals throughout Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Spain, South America, Asia and the U.S.A., including the prestigious IDEA, CanFitPro and IHRSA conferences. I am the recipient of the 1998 IDEA International Personal Trainer of the Year and 1998 CanFitPro Canadian Fitness Presenter of the Year awards. I am currently a member of the IDEA Personal Training Committee, the CanFitPro Advisory Board and the Clark College Personal Training committee.
I became a fitness educator because I love to teach and share the information I have learned. I remember my very first fitness conference. It was a small event and the presenters were Helen Vanderberg and Lynn Brick. I learned so much from them and was inspired by their professionalism and their passion and I remember committing to one day, do the same thing for another budding fitness professional. I have so many people that I look up to in the fitness industry including Maureen Hagan, Jay Blahnik, Tatiana Koulovou, Matt Church, Gregory Florez, Douglas Brooks, Mindy Myrlea, Len Kravitz, and more that inspire me to give and share what I can. I continue to teach because it is so personally rewarding. It is so satisfying to receive emails or letters from fitness professionals who tell me how much I've helped them. It feels great to know I help provide fitness professionals with the tools and resources they need to help clients and inspire the world to fitness. Our cause is such a worthy one and I've received so much from the fitness industry that it only seems right to give back as a fitness educator and share as much of my expertise and experiences as I can.
I am committed to helping fitness professionals realize that we are doing much more than just designing an exercise program or teaching an exercise class. We're changing people's lives. I couldn't have asked for a better career. To know that I've played a small part, directly or indirectly, in helping someone become more healthy and fit is as rewarding as it gets. I am completely passionate about the benefits of regular exercise and believe a consistent regime will positively impact anybody's life. I believe in achieving dreams, challenging one's individual limits, training hard and becoming the best you can be. When someone makes a commitment and focuses their mind on any endeavor, anything is possible.
When I'm not working, I'm enjoying time with my husband, Alex, and my three and a half year old daughter, Brianna. We love to hike, run and cycle together. We regularly challenge ourselves to physical contests and are always trying to reach our personal bests. We can't expect anyone to become anything more than we are willing to become ourselves. We thank God for his blessings and for providing us the opportunity to work together and help others.
I thank ACE for its 20 years of service to the fitness industry and for setting the standards that inspire us to all reach for excellence.
