Awhile back, in 2003, I wrote to the American Council on Exercise to let them know that becoming ACE Certified in 1999 was one of the greatest accomplishments of my professional career. Since fitness and exercise always played a major role in my lifestyle it seemed only natural to pursue a professional career along this path. So, with a degree in Physics and nearly two decades of mechanically engineering inanimate objects I translated my engineering skills to the human body. It was a natural transformation to say the least. Coupled with my Personal Training Certification from ACE, my confidence and competence were complete. I had the necessary equipment to start anew.

Not one year from the time I was ACE certified, a slight accident set off a series of events that led me to seek medical attention. Prior to this incident, I felt my physical strength diminishing slightly. Initially I attributed this to the start of my new personal training business and the related extra physical activity involved. Nothing could have prepared me for the diagnosis. I was so unsuspecting; I could not have been more stunned. The days, weeks and months to follow were predetermined, set by the protocol governing my diagnosis, for which I was to follow. As most of us facing a life threatening ailment will agree upon, we look for reassurance in the health provider administering the prognosis. I was reassured whole-heartedly with the words “You have cancer, cancer doesn’t have you.” At that moment what I wanted to hear was that I was going to be cured, so I did not quite understand the phrase given to me, nor the power in the words. It did not take long for me to realize that this was what I needed to hear; I have cancer, cancer doesn’t have me!

There are some things in life that go beyond our control. However we deal with the situation is entirely up to us. At some point, I knew I would use my experiences throughout this illness as a means of recruiting and training special populations, as I am now myself. This would become my focal point during the treatment and recovery phase of my illness. Every special population group, whether cancer, obesity, hypertension, cardiac condition, etc., have a commonality; the need to prevail. This would remain with me throughout my own chemotherapy treatment, my recovering period and well into my rebuilding and remission stage, where I am today. I have become a better personal trainer, and use these experiences with my clients. From my perspective of starting over, whether it is a new career, or from a long-term illness, the challenges ahead are met willingly, if at the origin of the journey there is a guiding light. I tell my clients, it is good to look back at the light, so they can see how far they have come.
