Sometimes, when things are right under our nose, we miss how important they are. Such was the case with me and my association with ACE. I have had the great fortune of living in San Diego, California for the past 14 years. And it took me almost that long to figure out the value an ACE certification could bring to my professional career.
Along the way I have had the privilege of sharing what I know as a presenter at national conventions, writing for industry periodicals and Web sites and leading seminars on Function First’s unique approach to functional exercise. My personal clientele has included heads of some of the largest corporations in America, professional athletes and rock stars as well as grandmothers and teenagers.
I have been in the fitness field for over 15 years. It began with a Bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Trenton State College in New Jersey. Shortly after graduation I moved to San Diego and earned my Master’s degree in biomechanics and athletic training from San Diego State University. During my graduate work, I spent over 1500 hours as a student trainer. It was during this time that my fascination with the mechanics of the body really took hold.
Since finishing up at SDSU in 1991, I have been working with clients who have musculoskeletal challenges. In 1994, my partner Aaron Brooks and I co-founded Function First, Inc. Our company works with a very specific kind of clientele. Because of this, I didn’t see the need to pursue additional personal training certifications, because I wasn’t doing traditional personal training.
Then in 2002 I had the privilege of getting to know some of the staff at ACE through various industry events. It was then that I learned of their Clinical Exercise Specialist certification. After reviewing the textbook that prepares you for the exam, I knew this certification was ideal for me. It would assist me in being as professionally prepared as possible for the type of client I work with. The text has served as a tremendous reference for me and is always easily accessible right next to my desk. The Clinical Exercise Specialist certification has helped me more clearly define my professional path.
In addition to the certification, I have had the tremendous benefit of having access to the ACE headquarters here in San Diego. This has led to more and more interaction with the ACE staff. The professionalism and integrity of ACE is evident in everyone on the ACE team.
The fact that the integrity of ACE is behind my certification is as important to me as the certification itself. I urge any professionals looking to enter the field to consider not only the quality of the information being provided for a certification, but also the quality of the organization that is behind it. The information will change as the research changes, but what your certifying organization stands for should remain constant.
As my professional opportunities for speaking and writing continue to grow, I will continue to express to the audience the importance of the ACE certification to my credentials. And if all goes as planned...inspire them to never stop learning.
