ACE-certified Success Stories

Lisa Ryckman
ACE-certified Group Fitness Instructor
ACE-certifed Personal Trainer
The Rocky Mountain News
Denver, Colorado

As a journalist, I have always believed that everyone has a story worth telling, and I have spent my career listening. Many of those stories were tragic and terrible, as difficult to report as they were to read. But when my colleagues went to the bar to decompress, I always went to the gym.

One day 20 years ago, I walked into Jane Fonda's San Francisco studio and was instantly hooked on group exercise. I became one of those instructor-wannabes who always stood at the front of the class. But I didn't actually become a fitness teacher until years later, when I found myself living in Denver with two kids and 15 extra pounds.

I began working out at the YMCA up the street, lost the extra weight and finally got up the courage to become an instructor. The rewards were twofold: I loved helping others reach their fitness goals, and I got the exercise I needed, too.

As a reporter, I've spent my career digging up every bit of information I can about all kinds of topics, and I apply the same standard to my personal interests. That's why I made it my business to find out which of the many certifications out there were actually worth having. The fitness professionals I asked all said the same thing: ACE certifications are the only ones that every fitness professional absolutely needs.

So I got two: group fitness instructor and personal trainer. My fellow instructors were right. ACE certifications confer instant credibility and respect. They also open unexpected doors.

In November, my editor at The Rocky Mountain News offered me a new position as the paper's first Health & Fitness Editor—an opportunity to combine my passions for both writing and teaching about topics that can really make a difference in people's lives.

It would be a big change for someone whose job had been all about the news. But I was intrigued enough to give it a try.

Now I know I made the right decision. The response to my first health and fitness section was overwhelming and wonderful. Readers seemed delighted that they could count on weekly fitness features that could help motivate them to make healthy lifestyle choices.

My goal is to help my readers reach their goals, and ACE helps me do that. I count on ACE's continuing education requirements to help keep me sharp as a fitness instructor and writer, and I look to ACE publications for information and inspiration.

I feel privileged to be able to take what I've learned as an ACE-certified Fitness Professional and share that expertise with not just a class of 20 students but an audience of 300,000 readers. The other day, one of those readers asked me how to become a fitness instructor. I gave her the same excellent advice I had received: get an ACE certification—it's the one that really matters.
