All coaches know that specificity is one of the cornerstones of successful training. Any adaptation brought about by training will be specific to the type of training undertaken. Many sports break themselves down into a number of different skills that can be learnt and improved upon using different disciplines within the sport. For many recreational athletes this allows for more variety in their training particularly in the off-season or when the conditions are inappropriate for normal training sessions. We will look at four different cycling disciplines; road racing, time trialling, mountain/trail biking and track cycling and the skills and benefits that can be gained from each that are transferable to the indoor cycling coach and fitness athlete and how that discipline can benefit those of other specific cycling disciplines.
