With childhood obesity rates continually rising, learning to communicate the importance of nutrition to children and teenagers is an essential part of encouraging a healthier population. It also helps them become healthier adults. Get a fresh perspective on children’s nutrition programs from Kala Shipley, Executive Officer of Health Promotion at the Iowa Department of Public Health, who has spent her career researching childhood obesity, promoting exercise among kids, supplementation, hyperactivity and more.

You will learn:

  • Nutrition guidelines for children and adults, and assessments for growth development
  • To identify environmental, cultural, socio-economic and family influences for the prevention of childhood overweight or obesity
  • Pros and cons of vitamin/mineral supplements for children and adolescents
  • Science-based relationships between hyperactivity and food; psychoses/behavior and food; and performance/learning abilities and food
  • Areas of concern regarding nutrition in adolescent athletes and how to evaluate diet for adequacy
  • Ramifications of high-serum cholesterol in children including causes of atherosclerosis, risk assessments and measuring techniques, and treatments
