Module 5: Special Exercise Programming Topics
This module begins with a presentation of mind-body exercise that offers suggestions on how to incorporate mindful techniques and movements into any client’s workout regimen. Both traditional mind-body forms—yoga, tai chi, and qigong—and contemporary forms—including Pilates, Nia, and the Alexander Technique—are discussed.
The special populations covered in this module range from cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke to arthritis, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome and include other special population classifications such as youth, older adults, and obese individuals. For each of these populations, the instructor presents an overview, exercise guidelines, and a sample exercise recommendation.
This module closes with a discussion of common musculoskeletal injuries that most personal trainers are likely to encounter during the course of their careers. Upper-extremity injuries include shoulder strain/sprain and rotator cuff injuries; lower-extremity injuries include ankle sprains and iliotibial band syndrome. A discussion of low-back pain is also featured. The following topics are covered in this module:
- Mind-body Exercise
- Exercise and Special Populations
- Common Musculoskeletal Injuries and Implications for Exercise
*Note: ACE-certified professionals who hold a certification other than Personal Trainer or Advanced Health & Fitness Specialist and successfully complete this course will earn 0.3 Continuing Education Credits (CECs).
