The nutrition knowledge of personal trainers and other fitness professionals can be highly variable, ranging from novice to expert. The course provides basic foundational information on nutrition concepts for those who have not had much prior training in nutrition. Participants will learn about the differences between essential and nonessential nutrients and, further, the distinction between macro- and micronutrients. Measurement units in nutrition, such as the kilocalorie (kcal, or Calorie), and metric-to-conventional unit conversions are presented and explained. Energy constants per gram of carbohydrate, protein, alcohol, and fat are presented so that the participant can see how the energy content of a food can be estimated from the macronutrient content listed onthe label. The different classes of Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI), which are individual nutrient intake recommendations, are highlighted. The connection between the DRI and the Daily Values that consumers see on food labels is explained. Other topics include the USDA Choose My Plate resources and nutritional scope of practice for nondietitian fitness professionals.
