IMPROVE YOUR KNOWLEDGE IN FITNESS BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The Fitness Business Management course is designed for health and fitness professionals who have a self-directed approach to mastering the competencies expected of a supervisor or manager of a fitness business. Required reading includes Fitness Management (3rd edition), a comprehensive, digital textbook addressing the knowledge and skills a health and fitness professional must master (e.g., branding, business planning, equipment specification, facility design, financial management, marketing, membership retention, operations, programming and sales). In addition to reviewing the required text, participants must examine a detailed presentation that addresses each of the competencies required of a manager or supervisor in the fitness business.

HOW DO I EARN ONE?

To complete the Fitness Business Management course you must complete an online course that consists of five distinct but interconnected educational modules:

  1. The Heritage of the Fitness Industry – Past and Present
  2. Building, Marketing and Selling Your Brand
  3. The Service Profit Chain, Membership Retention and the Keys to Engaged Employees and Members
  4. Business Planning and Financial Management
  5. Operations and Risk Management

To ensure you learn the material in the step-by-step manner in which it is designed, you must complete the learning modules and quizzes in the order listed below. You will have access to all five learning modules at once but should only commence working on subsequent modules once you have successfully completed the one before it. Multiple-choice quizzes for each module are delivered in a convenient, online format.

For health and fitness professionals, the Fitness Business Management course is equivalent to 1.6 ACE CECs.

The Heritage of the Fitness Industry – Past and Present
Explore the past and present history of the health and fitness industry, beginning with an overview of the landmark innovations and achievements that shaped it and finishing with more recent achievements and innovations. In the first lesson of this module, participants will explore the current state of the industry and learn the underlying dynamics that currently influence the health and fitness industry. In the second lesson, participants will be introduced to the history of the health and fitness industry.

The Heritage of the Fitness Industry – Past and Present explores:

Explore the past and present history of the health and fitness industry, beginning with an overview of the landmark innovations and achievements that shaped it and finishing with more recent achievements and innovations. In the first lesson of this module, participants will explore the current state of the industry and learn the underlying dynamics that currently influence the health and fitness industry. In the second lesson, participants will be introduced to the history of the health and fitness industry.

Upon successful completion of this module you will:

  • Major trends (i.e., business models, programming approaches, consumer behaviors and more) that are shaping the health and fitness club industry
  • Leading demographic trends impacting consumer participation in health and fitness clubs
  • Key landmark innovations from the health and fitness industry’s history and relevance of those historical achievements in shaping today’s trends and the industry’s future.

Building, Marketing and Selling Your Brand
In module two, participants will explore consumer attitudes and behaviors surrounding health and fitness, and then delve into the business competencies needed to successfully bring a health and fitness club to market. This module is comprised of five lessons, beginning with a lesson on understanding consumer attitudes and behaviors, then progressing through a series of four lessons addressing industry business models, industry membership models, branding and marketing and finally, selling memberships and fitness services.

Building, Marketing and Selling Your Brand explores:

In module two, participants will explore consumer attitudes and behaviors surrounding health and fitness, and then delve into the business competencies needed to successfully bring a health and fitness club to market. This module is comprised of five lessons, beginning with a lesson on understanding consumer attitudes and behaviors, then progressing through a series of four lessons addressing industry business models, industry membership models, branding and marketing and finally, selling memberships and fitness services.

Upon successful completion of this module you will:

  • To define the demographic and psychographic characteristics of individuals who join health and fitness clubs, and to describe the attitudes and beliefs that shape people’s decisions to purchase a club membership
  • Core steps that an entrepreneur would need to take in establishing a new business in the fitness industry, including understanding the types of business models that can be pursued and the steps required to legally establish a health and fitness business

The Service Profit Chain, Membership Retention and the Keys to Engaged Employees and Members
In module three, participants will dive into the elements that comprise the "Service Profit Chain," which states that when you have a great organizational culture that generates employee loyalty and high levels of employee performance, you will have set in place the forces to inspire memorable member experiences. This module is comprised of four lessons, the first of which introduces key principles and practices for driving member retention. The second lesson focuses on how to program a health and fitness club so it engages and enriches the member experience. The last two lessons focus on the competencies necessary to build a powerful business culture and develop and lead an empowered workforce.

The Service Profit Chain, Membership Retention and the Keys to Engaged Employees and Members explores:

  • The types of programming most frequently offered in the health and fitness industry along with demonstrating the competencies necessary to successfully create and execute a program that enhances member experiences
  • What it takes to foster a strong organizational culture and then leverage that organizational culture to build and lead a passionate, disciplined and competent team of employees

Business Planning and Financial Management
In module four, participants will explore the components critical to opening and managing a fiscally responsible and successful health and fitness club. In the first of four lessons, you’ll cover an overview of what is required to design and construct a quality health and fitness facility. The second lesson presents the competencies necessary for establishing a sound business plan to guide your strategic and operational business decisions. The third lesson provides a thorough introduction to the core principles and practices of successful financial management. And the final lesson in the module introduces the principles and practices of effective deal making and negotiation in business relationships.

  • To demonstrate the knowledge necessary to managing the essential administrative and operating policies and procedures in a health and fitness club
  • How to structure and monitor the execution of an emergency response program and risk management system for a health and fitness club

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to understand and assess market dynamics and use that information to establish a successful value proposition for a health and fitness club
  • Demonstrate the ability to build a successful business strategy, including the development and execution of a business plan and financial plan
  • Demonstrate the ability to build and execute a marketing and sales strategy that will support your business plan and financial targets
  • Demonstrate the ability to build and lead an empowered employee team
  • Demonstrate the ability to build an effective strategy for fostering member experiences that drive member loyalty and membership retention
