Ready for a second ACE certification?
Are you looking for a new challenge?
Have you considered sitting for a second ACE exam? I know, I know, some of you are just starting your studies for your first ACE exam…but now is a good time for me to put the idea in your head. Maybe you are a group fitness instructor who is being approached for small group or individual training. Or you might be a personal trainer who realizes that their client base is starting to develop more health issues as they age.
ACE currently has four certifications – Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach, and Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist. The Personal Trainer certification and the Group Fitness Instructor certification are often the first step for most candidates. To sit for the PT or GFI exam, you must have a current CPR/AED certificate and be 18 years of age or older.
When comparing the PT and GFI, both require candidates to know and understand the background sciences. And guess what? That information is the same for both exams! If you have taken the PT and decide to study for the GFI…it means you may be able to spend less time reviewing those background science chapters and can spend more time learning about the specifics of being a group fitness instructor.
What if you decide the LWMC or AHFS is what you want to tackle next? The requirements for these exams are a bit different than the PT/GFI requirements. Of course, all exams require you have your CPR/AED certificate and be 18 years of age. LWMC also requires that candidates hold another ACE certification (GFI, PT, AHFS) or another NCCA personal trainer certification. LWMC candidates could also hold a Bachelor’s degree (4 year degree) in exercise science or a related field in order to qualify for the exam.
AHFS qualification is a little more detailed than LWMC. With AHFS, candidates need everything the LWMC candidate needs but also 300 documented hours of work experience. Questions about what type of work experience, how you document it, etc. are best addressed by the Exam Registration department, x783
As you might have noticed, the LWMC and AHFS exams build off the information you learned when you were preparing for your Personal Trainer exam…one of the reasons we list it (along with other ACE exams) as a pre-requisite for taking those exams.
Other things to keep in mind if you choose to sit for a second exam is that the certification exam cost is reduced for ACE professionals…passing your second exam can provide continuing education credits towards renewal of your first exam…and you build your knowledge level with every exam! Holding multiple certificates – in different areas – may also provide a benefit when searching for employment or building your client base.
