Help! I'm falling behind!

Asleep at the keyboardWe all know how it goes. You’re trying to find the time to read your manual, review your flashcards, cook dinner, walk the cat, get to work on time…and it never ends. Next thing you know you’re getting Week 6 of your free Study Coach Program emails and you’ve barely looked at Week 3.

But don’t panic! Take a seat, take a deep breath, and put your brain in neutral for a moment. The first question to ask yourself is…do you have a testing deadline? This could be a deadline your boss has put on you, maybe you want to take a paper/pencil test and they offer it only once a year in your area, or perhaps you are already signed up for a testing date. Okay, this is a legit deadline to worry about. If this is your scenario, it’s time to prioritize your life and your studies.

Do you need more study time? Do you need a study partner? Do you need more focused study time? Focused study time means turning off the TV and the computer, and putting your phone in the other room. For many of us our attention spans have changed since we were in school. It’s no longer as easy to sit and read for a specific length of time. But now is when you need to try. 

What if you have a fuzzier deadline? Maybe you want to get your test done before your youngest starts walking. Or maybe it needs to be done before winter. Or before the corn gets knee high (that would be in July if you’re outside the Midwest). A vague deadline still doesn’t let you off the hook when it comes to studying. And sometimes it can even sabotage you. With a vague deadline it’s easy to take time off from studying to focus on ‘really learning this information’ before you move on to the next chapter.

How it usually works is you figure that since you have the time you might as well take advantage of it and make sure you’ve absorbed all the information before you move on. Then you get stuck in the ACE Essentials of Exercise Science and your timeline spirals out of control.

But what if you are in the middle of those two extremes? You had a vacation or a family event and you’re a few weeks behind your Study Coach Program guidelines. Not in a real panic yet, but you can see it coming.

I assume you realize there is nobody standing over you, making sure you follow your study coach plan to the letter. However, you may want to take a week or two to focus on your studying (using some of the hints from above) in an attempt to catch up to where you should be.

The goal of the Study Coach Program is to keep you on track, keep you moving forward so you get through your material in the recommended 3-6 months. Ideally it prevents the stuck on Chapter 3 syndrome and helps manage the ‘how will I get through all of this material’ problem.  Use it, but don’t feel like getting a little behind is the end of everything. It might just be an indicator you need to refocus.
