What are some back pain do's and don'ts for exercise?

Back pain is something that many of us experience- in fact, it’s the second most common complaint cited in doctor’s offices. It is estimated that 80% of Americans will suffer at least one episode of back pain in their lifetime, and it’s been reported that in 2010 alone Americans spent nearly $50 billion dollars on the treatment of back pain. Although there are many causes of back pain, there are some common things you may be doing in your workout that may be contributing to an already aching back. Join ACE's Jessica Matthews as she reveals some exercise Do's and Don'ts for exercisers experiencing back pain.

Jessica is an Exercise Physiologist for the American Council on Exercise and a fitness blogger, writing Weight Watchers, Fitbie and SHAPE. She is an adjunct professor at MiraCosta College, teaching courses in the Department of Kinesiology, Health and Nutrition. She holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education teacher education from Coastal Carolina University and a master’s degree in physical education from Canisius College, as well as two ACE certifications (Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer); she’s also an experienced registered yoga teacher (E-RYT) through Yoga Alliance.
