About Richard Carmona
Dr. Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, serves as vice chairman of Canyon Ranch, the country’s leading health and wellness company, and president of the Canyon Ranch Institute Board of Directors. Dr. Carmona holds bachelor degrees from the Bronx Community College of the City University of New York and the University of California, San Francisco, where he also earned a medical degree. Dr. Carmona started and directed Arizona’s first regional trauma care system, and later became chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System, a professor at the University of Arizona, and Pima County Sheriff’s Department surgeon and deputy sheriff. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
In 2002, Dr. Carmona was selected to serve a four-year term as the U.S. Surgeon General due to his extensive experience in public health, clinical sciences and health care management. As Surgeon General, he focused on prevention, preparedness, health disparities, health literacy, and global health to include health diplomacy.
